Broner: Nobody is talking about Maidana’s win; just my loss

Former WBA 147 lb. champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) is poised to get a rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) on April 19th or April 26th, provided that Maidana doesn’t choose to ignore the rematch clause that the 24-year-old Broner exercised on Friday and fight someone else instead for better money. The only other fighter that Maidana could fight that would give him a bigger payday than the Broner rematch is a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. That doesn’t seem too likely given that Amir Khan is being talked about as Mayweather’s next opponent for his Mayweather 3rd bout.

Broner is already vowing to get revenge against Maidana by turning into a type of fighter that he’s never seen before. Of course, if Broner couldn’t fight any better than he did last time then it’s hard to imagine him showing a hidden gear in a rematch. We saw pretty much the best of Broner last December against Maidana. We saw the same from Broner last June in his close win over Paulie Malignaggi. Broner appears to be totally maxed out with his foot to the floor as far as getting the most out of his ability. He’s just not really great at 147 like he was at 135 fighting against smaller guys after he rehydrated.

“The rematch will have a different outcome guaranteed,” Broner said to ESPN. “I’m happy for (Maidana). I want him to have his 15 minutes of fame. At the end of the day, nobody is talking about his victory. They are talking about Adrien Broner’s loss. Some people don’t even know who I lost to. They just know I lost.”

What Broner says gives you a pretty good indication of his ego and how he sees himself. Broner’s ego seems to be way too high for someone who got beaten as badly as he did. You can twist Broner’s statement about Maidana having his 15 minutes of fame and put that right on him as well, because it looks very much like Broner has now had his 15 minutes of fame, at least as far as him fighting in the 147 lb. division. If he can’t beat Maidana, then who can Broner beat in the welterweight division? Broner will need to think about moving down to the 140 lb. division if he loses the Maidana rematch, because his career will sink fast if he refuses to face reality that he’s not cut out for the welterweight division.
