Amir Khan Says Floyd Mayweather Is Messing Up His Own Legacy

The circus that surrounds Floyd Mayweather’s potential opponent for his ‘final’ fight in September has been arguably led by one ‘ringmaster’ – a man who calls himself ‘King’, yet acts more like a Jester in terms of his very public chasing of the lucrative opportunity many – fighters and fans alike – consider him undeserving of.

I am of course talking about Britain’s Amir Khan, who in his ever desperate and public quest to get Floyd between the ropes, has told Ringcast.net that the future Hall of Fame Inductee is “messing his own legacy up” by ostensibly refusing to fight him on September 12th and opting for a ‘softer’ option.

Khan said;

“We’ve been talking to Al Haymon and hopefully we’ll find out in a week what’s going to happen. Mayweather wants to fight on September 12th and I’ll be ready for that date.”

How serious he was remains to be seen, but Mayweather has publicly name dropped Andre Berto and relative unknown Karim Mayfield to the media as possible names for September – something Khan hasn’t taken kindly to.

“I think he’s messing his own legacy up. He needs to finish on a high. What he’s probably going to do is leave the game on a low and I think that’s the worst thing to do.”

“Mayweather hasn’t announced who he’s fighting yet. He’s mentioned a few names but mine should have been in there because it’s a fight that the fans want and it’s a fight that would make big money.”

It’s impossible for Khan to ignore the subject of domestic rival and IBF 147 lb champion Kell Brook – a man also in the frame as a potential Floyd opponent.

In all honesty, for UK fans especially – there is more desire to see Khan fight the Sheffield man than there is for the Mayweather fight. However, it’s a match up the former Athens silver medalist is dead set against.

“When the question comes to me ‘why don’t you fight Kell Brook?’ – My body’s taken wear and tear fighting all the top guys, the world champions – so why isn’t Kell doing that? Why should I give him this big payday he’s after?”

“Let him build his name, let him prove himself, let people say he’s untouchable and then I’ll come and beat him. We’re both the same age, young and hungry and I’ve done a lot more in my career. I believe he has to step it up a bit.”
