Al Haymon has signed Baltimore prospect Gervonta Davis 6-0-(6KOs). Davis had a phenomenal amateur career with 206 wins and 15 losses. He is one of the most promising prospects coming from the baltimore area. The city hasn’t had a known champion since Hasim Rahman shocked Lennox Lewis in 2001 for the heavyweight title. Davis trains out of Upton Boxing Gym with trainer Calvin Ford. Calvin was the real life inspiration for the character Dennis “Cutty” Wise from HBO hit show “The Wire”.

Davis is a southpaw with devastating power and speed. He is a crafty boxer that even as an amateur he was outclassing guys in the professional ranks. Most people from the area know him by his amateur nickname “Tank”, but he is now called “Rambo”. The members of Upton look up to Davis because they see all the hard work finally paying off. Davis eats, breathes, and sleeps boxing. He has been boxing since the age of eight. He turned pro last year after he won a National Golden GIoves and all his professional victories have come by knockout.

I expect Davis to be a great asset to Haymon in the future because without a doubt Gervonta Davis will be a world champion one day. I know it is early to determine if a prospect will be a champion but I have worked in the gym with Davis and you can see the natural talent and drive to be great within him. If you ask anyone about boxing in the Baltimore area it will be hard to find someone who doesn’t say Gervonta Davis is the future of boxing. Big words for the young prospect to live up to but nonetheless Davis is up to the challenge.

Now that Davis has signed with Haymon expect him to get more exposure nationally. His next fight takes place in Boston on a Golden Boy undercard on March 17th. That card will be televised on Fox Sports 1. Tune in on the 17th of March to keep up with Gervonta as his campaign to become world champion continues.
