By Prince Dornu-Leiku – The countdown is over and the moment of truth is upon us later tonight in the Ghanaian capital, Accra when former world champion, Joseph King Kong Agbeko finally returns to the ring for the first time since December 2011, exactly six years to the day since he last fought in the homeland and on his 33rd birthday.
Agbeko takes on Colombian slugger, Luis Melendez for the IBO Bantamweight title at the Accra Sports Stadium and after both boxers weighed-in on Thursday afternoon, the stage has been set for the headline bout of Agbeko’s own newly formed Fresh King Entertainment’s maiden ever promotion, incidentally the first world title fight in Ghana in over 25 years.
Coming in the wake of a Congress and elections which elected Peter Zwennes as the new President of the sport in Ghana, young prospects Sena Agbeko and Fred Lawson also feature on the action packed bill expected to attract many Ghanaian boxing greats, administrators, officials, fans and enthusiasts including some of Agbeko’s musician and actor friends to the national stadium.
Agbeko was accompanied to the weigh-in by famous Ghanaian hiplife star, Samini and has revealed a desire to win for Ghanaians as the perfect birthday gift.
“I’m in great shape, I’m confident of victory. It could be a knockout, it could be on points but definitely an impressive win,” Agbeko told www.sportsinghana.com after successfully clearing his weight.
He continued: “I love Ghanaians and I appreciate your support for me over the years even when I was not fighting in Ghana. Please pray for me and come to Accra Sports Stadium to cheer me to victory. This is not a fight for me alone, it’s a fight for the entire nation.”
