By Paul “Paparazzi” Jones – Former three-division World Champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) held an open workout today at the Bald Eagle Boxing Annex (DC) in preparation for his May 3rd showdown against Carlos Molina (17-1-1, 7 KOs).

The 10-round Junior Welterweight bout, which is part of the Mayweather vs. Maidana (SHOWTIME PPV®) undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (NV), marks the return of Broner, 24, after losing to Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) last December.

The former WBA Welterweight Champ is eager to erase the memory of his lackluster performance against Maidana, 30, in which he was put on his wallet twice courtesy of left hooks in rounds 2 and 8. Despite Broner having his moments, he would drop a wide unanimous decision to the Argentinean slugger.

To get back to basics, the Cincinnati native has been training in the gym of IBF Junior Welterweight titlist Lamont “Havoc” Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KOs) and his trainer Barry Hunter. Broner is also sporting a Rick Ross-style beard these days and vows to rebound in spectacular fashion against Molina.

Carlos Molina, 29, of California, is also coming off a loss to Amir King Khan (28-3, 19 KOs), 27, in which he took considerable punishment before his corner threw in the towel after the 10th round. Molina also had trouble with Khan’s speed and power which may bode well for Broner who is known for his fast hands. Additionally, the fact that the Californian has been inactive for more than a year could mean that he may have some ring rust when he squares off with Broner.

Although the Mayweather-Maidana match-up will take center stage next month, many boxing fans will be interested in seeing whether Broner can be a “Problem” for Molina and return to the form that made him a dangerous force in the Lightweight and Super Featherweight divisions.

Other News & Notes

  • Also on hand to train with Broner was Henry “Hank” Lundy (24-3-1, 11 KOs) who is coming off a dominant win over Angelo Santana (14-2, 11 KOs) in February.
