With Christmas fast approaching, many boxing fans were recently disappointed by the recent news that middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and fellow champion Gennady Golovkin have apparently agreed to terms that allow each man a voluntary defense of his respective version of the WBC middleweight title. Originally the WBC had promised Golovkin an immediate shot at the winner of the recent Canelo-Cotto “middleweight” showdown. However, the WBC didn’t seem to want to force the issue, instead stating that they would prefer a double-header featuring both boxers in order to “build up” a would-be future clash between the two. Note that this is not the first time that the WBC has promised Gennady a title shot that never came to fruition, and if history is any indication, it may still yet be a long while before Golovkin is afforded his chance to become the legitimate middleweight champion.

While the move, which appears to have been orchestrated as part of some master plan by the WBC to milk the rewards that come with having superstar Canelo as their champion, a lot of boxing fans are outright angry, and many more are unsurprised by the unfolding of these events. Golovkin is widely viewed as the greatest middleweight in the world, despite the fact that Canelo is the legitimately recognized king of the 160 pound division. On one hand, Golovkin is overly eager for the chance to face Canelo, because the Mexican champion represents a very favorable match-up that will not only result in a career high payday, but will also drastically increase his future earnings should he beat Canelo. On the other side, Canelo’s people (mainly Golden Boy Promotion’s posterboy, Oscar De La Hoya) have every reason in the world to try and avoid facing Golovkin and procrastinating to avoid the fight as long as possible – ideally indefinitely.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner briefly discusses the Canelo-Golovkin situation, while also giving fans a glimpse into the politics at play in the form of a song – a specially made Christmas Carol that helps bring the reality of the situation to light. Will Golovkin get a chance at Canelo some time in 2016? Or will Golovkin even ever get the chance to face Canelo at all? To get one man’s humble opinion, please watch this video. Hope you enjoy!
