Ashley Theophane looks back on ‘The Moment’

A week has passed, but the joy of victory is still very much with me.

I notched up my 35th win at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas – a world away from West London.

I battled the tough knock out artist Angino Perez. Perez had a 90% knock out ratio. He had been in with good fighters like world champion Richard Abril, and contender, Carlos Molina.
I dropped Perez in the second with a left hook, and the referee stopped the fight with 30 seconds to go in the fourth round. Perez was out on his feet whilst I pounded him with shots. It was a very entertaining fight.

Ashley Theophane Blog: Media day at the Mayweather Boxing Club

Ashley Theophane - Media day this week at the Mayweather Boxing Club was an event in itself.

Media day this week at the Mayweather Boxing Club was an event in itself.

The best of America’s boxing reporters were on hand to watch the team work out, and they were keen to get our thoughts on our respective fights and the main event.

They listened intently as I gave my responses – “I don’t ever worry about my opponent… Experience counts… I’ve been here before… I’m beyond ready… I’ve never been knocked out before… It’s going to be an action packed fight… I’m one win away from a world title fight… I’m focused… It’s all about getting the W… I’m good for another few years… I’m still young and hungry.”

Angino Perez is a knockout specialist, it’s what he does. 13 of his 15 wins have come by knockout – 8 of his last 9 wins have come by knockout by round 4. Of course he’s dangerous, but I’ve never looked for the easy option. He’s got a 90% knock out ratio when winning.

Ashley Theophane: Mike Tyson Inspired Me As A Kid

by Ashley Theophane – It was Saturday 22nd November 1986, when an extremely young and defiant fighter called Mike Tyson, became the youngest heavyweight champion of the world in the history of the sport of boxing. He won the crown in Las Vegas at the Hilton Hotel. Tyson was the self-proclaimed “baddest man on the planet”. After witnessing the demolition – no-one would dare argue with him.

A six year old kid in London was spellbound and mesmerised watching Mike Tyson explosively knock out Trevor Berbick.
28 years later that same kid is about to have his second fight in Las Vegas, on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana extravaganza at the MGM Grand Hotel.

Ashley Theophane: Underdog Spirit

This week saw our boss, Floyd Mayweather, along with the rest of ‘The Money Team’ (TMT) make the time to hand out food and water to homeless people around Las Vegas. It’s something I strongly believe in, taking the time out to assist those less fortunate than ourselves. One homeless person commented how it was nice to see the champ down here.

I’m in preparation and anticipating my next fight in Las Vegas in seven week’s time. It will be my second appearance in this city of glitz and glamor.

by Ashley Theophane – As I look forward to a fresh and positive new year, it has given me the chance to reflect back on 2013 from my perspective.

It has been an exceptional year that met the dreams I had as a five year old child. Many of the ‘experts’ have frequently said that it would not be possible for me to achieve hardly anything over my ten year career. This could have deflected anyone from their goals and dreams, but for me, it has only served to drive my determination to achieve even more.

I still have much more to achieve and have so many youngsters to continue the privilege of doing all I can to be a ‘role model’ for. My life is proof that if you believe and want to be something in life, you can achieve it. You just have to work really hard for it, without ever being put off by mishaps, lack of support or failure.
