The guy’s NOSE WAS BROKEN. Give him a break. He was beating Salido to a pulp when the fight was stopped. Ortiz had a BROKEN JAW when his fight was stopped. This is a “Sport”., not a fight to the death. Mikey’s stoppage was a great call. Ortiz stopping was a great call. Look at Margarito. He would still be fighting if he hadn’t left his career in the ring with Pacquiao, by trying to be a tough guy warrior.

Too much punch and grab on Garcia’s part, plus ref took way to long to break. You guys are right Garcia was way ahead on points, and was dominating up till the last 2 rounds but the fight wasn’t scheduled for 8 rounds. Mickey was doing a lot of running and big brother robert was very vocal about going to the score cards even before the doctor said anything. No question salido would have been there at the end of the 12th but can’t say the same for mickey even without the broken nose he used as a scapegoat. Fight reminded me of linares vs demarco. How linares dominated and outboxed demarco for 10 rounds and had kellerman and the rest of the hbo band wagon crew wetting there pants on his amazing boxing skills. Oh yeah demarco was on a sure road to a loss and all of a sudden in the 11th he connects with a hook and a cross and its over TKO victory for Demarco. That’s why they call them the championship rounds. If he dominated salido then why not do what he said he would and give him a rematch.

To SREDMOND ,,,Sal .O is correct and you are wrong ,,Mikey was starting to run in the last rounds before the fight was stop ..He was starting to feel the pressure from Salido ..even though Salido was not landing much ,,Mikey was starting to get scare ,,Mikey threw everything at Salido and could not stop him ,,Salido went threw the rough waters and was starting to apply pressure and Mikey and Roberto got scare ,so they call it quits ,,plain and simple …

shows how much you know about salido. had garcia worried enough ti quit. the fight was a 12 rounder

Posted January 22, 2013 10:14 pm

Salido adjusted to LOSING and nothing more, how EXACTLY did you adjust when you were down 10 points in the 8th round and the BEST shot you landed was a headbutt… Had Salido continued absent that butt he was going to get knocked down or out AGAIN

thank you jack dempsey, sal o.,and jamal. you can say what you want folks, but he took the easy way out.salido adjusted and mikey got tired and was getting touched.mikey was doing a good job,but it’s 12 rounds, and if he was all that, saldo wouldn’t have gotten up in the 1st place.robert garcia didn’t do mikey any favors.mandatory rematch if the wbo has any scruples.

well,i wouldn’t label mikey as an head case or compare him to victor ortiz, but spot on about everything else.can you imagine marciano,la motta,or basillio quitting because of a broken nose?there is a reason there is a term”a punchers chance”.

Posted January 22, 2013 5:54 pm

Ali’s people says he there was some substance in his eye. It was never proven if so why wouldn’t they arrest Liston and his people afterwards? I never read anywhere where they actually found something fishy going on other than what Ali and his people said-I love Ali to death as a fighter but what proof is there that Liston had anything to do with what their talking about? Anyway, Garcia whooped Salido’s ass like a child

Posted January 22, 2013 5:52 pm

Sal, seriously your post was a JOKE “Garcia was running” in what world? Salido was barely landing a damn thing absent that butt, Garcias face was untouched… Salido was a dead man and bringing up Juanma makes you sound desperate and out of touch

Posted January 22, 2013 5:50 pm

third world

absolutely right love t.s.,you ask people who actually have done some boxing and they will say that garcia was getting tired and the old man was getting at him.stopping a fight for a broken nose?are you f-ing kidding me?it was finally a fight, and it’s stopped because mikey is already a promoters cash cow.he was way ahead, but salido doesn’t quit.

Posted January 22, 2013 5:49 pm

Sal O, your interpretation of that fight is reserved ONLY for Salidos family when they give him FALSE confidence about his performance… Salido was accomplishing NOTHING the only thing he did that was effective was smash Garcias nose with his head…Garcia did NOT need to be courageous he was so damn good Salido was threat level 0000000000000000000000000 Juanma got beatdown and lost ALL status in the sport no one is discussing him being courageous and such nonsense…He was so courageous he tried to blame the ref and got suspended for the better part of a year… Juanma who??? Its been quite a bit since he stopped Ponce De Leon… Now he is remembered for serial KO losses to a fighter who had double digit losses on his record… Garcia is the future…

Posted January 22, 2013 5:48 pm

Garcia completely dominated Salido from the 1st round till the last. Salido had a few moments in the last round and I hear critics and fans making a big deal-talking about he was finding his way lmao. Garcia didn’t quit fighting because he was being beat up-they stopped the fight because of a head butt-if Floyd nose was broke when Ortiz purposely head butted him trust me the fight would’ve been over. If the broken nose came from a punch then he would’ve had to continue-another thing is Salido was outclassed and completely beat up-anyone who thinks Garcia lacks heart is a fool.

Posted January 22, 2013 5:48 pm

he is a young fighter and his family wanted protect him . some guys will leave it all in the ring and some will not . nothing new here, he not the first and he wont b the last

Posted January 22, 2013 5:18 pm

Sal .O

To SREDMOND,,, no one is comparing the skill level between Juamma Lopez vs Garcia knucklehead ,,we are saying about their courage ,where Juamma show a lot of heart in his fight against Salido even though he was getting his butt whip ..where in the case of Mikey( Victor Ortiz ) Garcia ran in the last two rounds because he was finally starting to get hit and then he quit ,,Moran !!! learn how to read first before you blog ….

There is NO silver lining for Salido, he is a tough, rugged yet limited fighter that should LOSE against solid boxers…” And Salido’s loss record validates that statement.

Posted January 22, 2013 1:49 pm

Is that a nose or a banana? NOW THATS A TARGET TO HIT. A anteater.

Posted January 22, 2013 10:57 am

Anyone bringing up Lopez performances against Salido vs Garcia’s needs his head examined… Lopez was BADLY exposed, he did not have the skill or tactics to negate a one dimensional pressure fighter and got knocked out TWICE… Garcia had Salido figured out by the first minute of the first round and had him bouncing off the canvas like a nerf ball… I seriously wonder how some peoples train of thought works?? There is NO silver lining for Salido, he is a tough, rugged yet limited fighter that should LOSE against solid boxers…

Posted January 22, 2013 10:57 am

Salido did NOT really deserve a shot to finish that fight after the way he was dominated and then his response intended or unintended with a BUTT that broke his opponents nose.. He was LOSING by something like 10 points and because he compromised Garcia with his head we are supposed to worry about his opportunities in the last rounds?? Had this been a punch it would have been incumbent upon Garcia to continue or LOSE the bout but it was NOT thus when the Dr waved it off, it went to the scorecards which had Salido BURIED… Garcia offered him a rematch so perhaps that will happen even though I see no reason to give Salido another shot, his performance was DREADFUL

Posted January 22, 2013 10:50 am

Tomato Can

According to some here, it would appear that fighters should use their heads to try and sing the fight into thier favor. Heck, why not let fighters butt eachother in the first round, to see who’s tougher, then comense with the fight?

Posted January 22, 2013 9:43 am

If it was up to Mikey he would have fought on, the decision was out of his hands, I don’t understand the controversy when there is none, he will pummel Siri even worse in a rematch.

this is boxing a broken nose is just a by product of the game boxers will finish there sparring session when it happens and definitely a fight . no way you stop for just a broken nose salido probably had one just like many of his other fights and sparring sessions. its the pain game. 12 rounds you dont stop till its over.looked like salido had plenty of gas in the tank. this was meant to be a 12 round pro fight . things change in the later rounds with pressure fighters coming on strong especially salido. a rematch is in order poinst dont mean nothing in prize fighting untill the fight is over. this was an uncompleted many fights have you seen when a pressure fighter comes back in the later rounds.

Rematch, they were flash knockdowns, several, but it will be a good rematch.

He was fighting salido, Garcia was 70-69 up, but the last 4 rounds?

Posted January 21, 2013 11:58 pm

Garcia did get a good headbutt on the nose, unintentionally, nose bleed, can’t breathe, one of them things.

Posted January 21, 2013 11:55 pm

Garcia is a good fighter, should of put him away.

Posted January 21, 2013 11:49 pm

“Salido was coming on…” Really? Your dreams are very vivid. Salido got his butt kicked for 8 rounds until the fight was stopped. And if he wouldn’t have rammed his head into Mikey’s face, he would have been TKO’d because if nothing else, his right eye would have swollen shut. Mikey won that fight fair and square. Get over it. He totally dominated “Siri.” Totally.

Broken nose caused by head-butt. A broken nose caused by a blow, would probably continue. Somehow seems wrong to continue fighting with such a significant disadvantage (broken nose!).

Posted January 21, 2013 10:57 pm

garcia made be believe until the broken nose part yet i understand why get hurt more when ur up by a lot but next time it could happen early and we will all see what happens

Posted January 21, 2013 9:47 pm

Garcia was winning the fight, but many others see that Salido was coming strong on the last four rounds. Those are the championship fight. I think a rematch would do good for boxing and Salido. If not Salido needs to look for a Salida (exit) in boxing.

Posted January 21, 2013 9:16 pm

Erik Morales has had his nose broken in every fight. Juan Manuel Marquez was knocked down 3 times against Pacquiao and fought on with a broken nose to get a draw. Julio Cesar Chavez — a guy everybody thinks has been babied — got busted up for 11 rounds only to come within seconds of knocking out Sergio Martinez. I can go on and on and on of stories of real fighters with real guts who fought on with real courage. Salido was getting his but kicked. BUT HE KEPT GOING. He kept fighting and fighting hard and it is a fact that Salido was landing big right hands and the punch output for Garcia was declining dramatically. Mickey Garcia and his trainer showed no guts. This is the Victor Ortiz tradition of boxing. Head cases with no guts and no willingness to stand there when things get tough. Any real boxing fan who saw the fight would tell you that Mickey Garcia and his trainer encouraged doctors to stop the fight because they were afraid of what would happen. They were afraid. They were afraid. They were AFRAID !!!!

Posted January 21, 2013 9:08 pm

The Garcia’s were smart — but it was also gutless. Good business decision. Bad for fans.

Posted January 21, 2013 9:00 pm

Anybody who says that Salido used his head intentionally is a moron who doesn’t know anything about boxing. Evander Holyfield used his head as a weapon. Bernard Hopkins used his head as a weapon. Timothy Bradley uses his head as weapon. Andre Ward uses his head as a weapon. Orlando Salido as absolutely no history of using his head as a weapon. Isreal Valdez vs. Rafael Marquez where Valdez has his nose broken in exactly the same place — Valdez thows in the towel and takes the loss. Mickey Garcia was winning the fight in great style — but it is a fact that Garcia was caught with big right hands by Salido and his punch out was declining dramatically. The Garcia’s encourage the doctors to stop the fight BEFORE IT BECAME A FIGHT. It was smart — but it was also gutless.

Posted January 21, 2013 8:59 pm

The guy’s nose was broken. Come on. Look what tough guy Margarito did by fighting on against Pacquiao. MARGARITO LEFT HIS CAREER IN THE RING WITH MANNY PACQUIAO. Was he smart?.

What the Heck… you must be an MMA fan because you know nothing about boxing.

Posted January 21, 2013 7:52 pm

Great article and absolutely correct. Salido was getting his butt kicked and started fighting dirty, period. Mikey owes that guy nothing. In fact by halting the fight he & his brother did Salido the favor of allowing him to walk out of the ring by his own power. Had the fight continued I doubt that would have been the case.

Posted January 21, 2013 7:09 pm

To @Sal .O,
You make no sense comparing this stoppage to Ortiz’s stoppage against Lopez. Victor’s came at the end of a punch while Mikey’s was the result of a headbutt. Dutz!

Posted January 21, 2013 7:02 pm

Yes Garcia was winning this fight easily but the last 2 rounds did show Garcia moving much more with Salido trying to get to him. Not saying he was getting to him but that is what it looked liked. And the problem is all these fighters say they are old school and willing to take anybody on but yet they look for a way out when something like this happens. And don’t say the officials stopped the fight. As soon as Garcia came to the corner he told them of the butt because nobody saw it and then they started talking to the officials about getting the fight stopped. That is the problem I have. Garcia should of continued the fight. Like I said he lost some respect, I still like him but not as much as I did before

Posted January 21, 2013 6:43 pm

Salido was starting to fight to dirty and that head bunt was not accidental. Mikey wants to give him a rematch but I screw that there are others he can fight.

Posted January 21, 2013 6:07 pm

Salido was NOT coming on he was just NOT bouncing off the canvas, he had every right to press his attack but the truth is that the cleanest, most effective blow he landed was with his head… Garcia had an insurmountable lead absent a KO, if this had been a scenario where he broke it with a punch I would question him just like I did Izzy Vasquez BUT this was a CLEAR but and Garcia was winning the fight going away… He earned the right not to fight compromised …. Salido frankly looked like an amateur in there and the Juanma fight has really nothing to do with the drubbing he was taking against Garcia, it was not remotely competitive.

Posted January 21, 2013 5:53 pm

Tark Stain

Proper decision by Garcia’s corner and the judges. Foul caused a broken nose, went to the scorecards and there it is. Bring on Broner and his circus act.

Posted January 21, 2013 5:49 pm

Salido was starting to land his shots even before the headbutt. That doesn’t mean he was going to win, but he was coming on. Just like against Lopez… I also remember Cotto getting headbutted by the much bigger Clottey resulting in a grotesquely bad cut early in his fight against him and continuing to fight on. Now, to be fair, maybe a broken nose is worse than a very bad cut (in a very bad spot), but I don’t know enough to have an informed opinion. But what has happened, rightly or wrongly, is that Garcia’s heart is coming into question. I’m sure his will and heart will be tested once again, and then maybe we’ll get a more definitive answer.

Posted January 21, 2013 5:22 pm

Salido was NOT coming back from anything but the floor… He could not compete with Garcia and prognostications about his heroic comeback are nonsense, he lost that right when his head broke the kids nose compromising this fighter absent the reality of a legal blow…

Posted January 21, 2013 5:14 pm

The only person getting tired in that fight was Salido, he was getting tired of getting countered, hearing the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 and having his gloves wiped off after getting put on the deck over and over… No matter how it occured he smashed this kid with his head and the level of dominance that Garcia was enjoying warranted NO additional rounds with the injury….Salido had brought NOTHING to the table and Garcia was sporting enough to offer him another payday…Personally I would move on, Salido was outclassed and he is the type of CRUDE fighter that might catch you will an elbow or head… Garcia has bigger fish to fry

Posted January 21, 2013 5:12 pm

Sal .O

Mikey Garcia pull a Victor Ortiz Saturday night ..Mikey was starting to feel the pressure in the last two rounds and if nobody notice then they dont know nothing about boxing ..Mikey looked good ,really good in the first six rounds but the 7th and 8th round he was getting hit ..the Garcia camp call it quits !!!Salido was not giving a chance to come back from almost defeat from the early rounds …

Posted January 21, 2013 5:12 pm

They should have lost but it looks like the Ref was paid off by someone to make sure Mikey won

Posted January 21, 2013 5:04 pm

First the head butt was accidental ,,second Mikey was getting tire and was starting to get hit in the last two rounds and Roberto Garcia knew this and advised the doctor to stop it ..Sure Mikey was winning the fight ,but its a 12 round fight not a 8 round fight ,Salido had another four rounds to fight ..plain and simple Mikey and Roberto call it quits ..

The El Paso Fight Prophet

Posted January 21, 2013 2:35 pm

This is a very good article…and very accurate…

Mikey was extremely generous calling it unintentional.. It was a deliberate foul.. Andre Ward said, “That does look intentional” because Salido seemed to drive his forehead willfully into Garcia’s face—almost as flagrantly as Ortiz did in his Mayweather fight.. The difference being Ortiz was trying to foul out—while Salido, a more experienced brawler, tried to make it look like an accident … This is Boxing after all … Garcia boxed Salido’s ears off—and the forehead is not a legal weapon with which to deliver a blow.

How often have you ever seen a boxer up by 10 or 12 points after 8 rounds???

Posted January 21, 2013 2:22 pm

broken nozzel

Posted January 21, 2013 1:55 pm

te tumbo

the unconventional if not illegal source of the broken nose grants Garcia full discretion about whether to proceed with a bout that’s been interrupted/tainted by a blatant foul. besides, until that point in the fight, Salido was being dominated and regularly decked by Garcia and the prospect of him prevailing because of a foul-generated injury would’ve been even less satisfying. if it was a legal punch that caused it, that’s the breaks. otherwise, Salido’s intentional or unintentional foul transformed the fight from a physical contest to a judgement call. Garcia made the wise, respectable, and sporting call.
