It isn’t necessarily that he “quit,” it’s that he didn’t put up a fight to continue. If the ref stops it, that’s that. BUT, he didn’t show the doctor that he was totally fine to keep fighting. Instead he just sat there and didn’t argue for him to continue. There have been a handful of fights where the boxer convinces a doctor to let the fight continue. But again, if he simply put up a noticable fight with the doctor, I wouldn’t have anything bad to say. Rocky Marciano’s nose was ripped in half and kept fighting, Ali and Abraham fought with broken jaws, Gatti with a broken hand (for a number of fights), these are the types of attitude I love in boxing. Hopefully he can redeem himself as others have, he has a lot of skill to do well.

And to Gregory, they absolutely don’t make them like they used to. The tough fighters of this generation are rare.

the guy can box . the guy can punch

I agree. I love to watch Mikey Garcia fight. He is mature than most other fighters.

Patrick2- You are absolutely CORRECT. IF Garcia quit its Salido’s fault. He allowed Garcia to get SO far UP on the scorecards that he could quit and get an automatic WIN. IF Salido was UP on the scorecards the Garcia would have to continue or take a LOSS. SO next time learn how to get UP on the scorecards or at least be competitive enough to cause some indecision. Why continue with a broken nose when I can WIN right now?? I can see if the guy was a challenge.

The arm-chair boxers will complain about Garcia “quitting” and the fight going to the judges, but Garcia was just dominating. In fact, Salido was down so much it was as if he was boxing on a sheet of ice. Plus, I think Salido was desperate to make something happen and that caused the clash of heads — not that it was purely intentional, just that he was running-in and HOPING to land a big shot. Not only that, but Garcia could have guarded his broken nose by putting on track shoes and running the last 3-4 rounds and still won an easy decision.

Salido was having TERRIBLE rounds when you judge them vs the baseline rounds where he was getting dropped 2x in a round suddenly if he stays on his feet it looks like an epic moment when the reality is that he was grossly ineffective and the beneficiary of Garcias overabundance of patience in the ring….That bout was all Garcia

I agree with you Phil. They don’t make them like they used to.

Garcia should of continued and it did seem like Salido was having some decent rounds at the end. I like Garcia but I did lose a little respect when he quit. I still wanna see Garcia fight. He definitely needs to defen the belt against a top contender.

Garcia was having and EASY night with Salido, but he should have learned a valuable lesson.. NEVER let a hurt and desperate opponent linger too long.. The ONLY guy that I am comfortable with toying with guys for a full 12 hurt or not is FMJ and he is simply an enigmatic fighter…Anyone trying to make a case for Salido needs to find the nearest bridge and jump, he was NOT in the fight in the slightest, he was looking VERY crude, inept and overmatched that butt gave him something to talk about as it pertains to a rematch that Garcia should be able to win via stoppage because Salido was hitting the floor from blows that were not even landing flush at times…

We know that Mikey beat Salido, we know that he hurt him several times, we don’t know what Salido brought to the table. The Garcia’s made the right decision, take the win and the belt, now they know that Mikey needs to work on his endurance, he was tired the last two rounds. As good as Mikey looked, we have to wait a few fights before we call him the “Greatest of All Time”.

This guy bores me. I hope his nose gets better though. He should go to Chris Arreola’s nose doctor.

only the ref can stop a fight, which he did on doctors orders, man some folks are a bit thick.

terror tim

Had it been a punched it wouldn’t have caved his nose in like that. His nose was smashed. Easy to criticize behind the keyboard. The kids showed some real skills in there and is going to be a force for awhile.

Quit?? The doctor told him to stop, after the fight Garcia pretty much said he wished the fight had continued. get off his back, great fight and Garcia took it ho im and delivered.

Gregory the ref stopped the fight on the doctors orders, Garcia had no choice, its a good job it was headbutt and not punch or Salido would have got the tko!

boxing skills at their finest from young Mikey, indeed a pleasure to watch.

Posted January 21, 2013 3:22 am

Yes, I can see how some fans might feel that way but it was a headbutt not a punch (not sure if that matters) and Solido was likely to keep going in wildly with his head which is how desperate he was. Why put your fighter in that position in a fight he was dominating so clearly?

pactards r idiots

Garcia has the talent to beat Broner…

Posted January 21, 2013 12:32 am

I notice that Garcia is winded and had lose the snap of his punches in the last rounds, and Salido is getting to him. We could clearly speculate what will happen had the fight continue, then the headbutt happens…. oh well.

Posted January 21, 2013 12:30 am

Well, it is a simple way to beat him. Make him hurt. I didn’t see refs stop any fight because of a broken nose. It was sad that Garcia didn’t fight to keep the match going.. I want to see guys determined to finish a fight no matter what. I don’t care if you are winning every round, he was ok to continue. Skills or not, I want guts, he didn’t show any. Hopefully he will prove his courage in a future fight, but it was a bogus ending.

This article was a joy to read actually. Finally a well written piece. Thanks author.

The Mad Scientist

Garcia definitely got mad skills but what a shame the fight ended the way it did..haters make matter worse by saying the kid saw an easy way out and took it,,whatever!

I say a rematch would be another beat down. The only thing that kept Salido in that fight was his chin — any other fighter would have ended up on his back and starring up at the lights.

Garcia was the BEST Fighter in the house. Time to go after Chris John.

Posted January 20, 2013 8:33 pm

Please make: Garcia vs Gamboa!! I say that’s the top fight to be made in 2013.

Posted January 20, 2013 8:32 pm

Garcia is so’s not even funny. He reminds me of a young Cotto. I can’t believe how ahead of the game he is. He made a strong Mexican boxer look absolutely WEAK. Garcia is ready for the BIG TIME… just sayin’

Edgar Guevara

A rematch sounds good.

Posted January 20, 2013 6:24 pm

not a great win for Garcia but he dominated the whole fight,he was far superior and like a true champ offer Salido a rematch if Salido wanted it.

Posted January 20, 2013 5:59 pm

Devil’s advocate…. Did he really quit while ahead?

Posted January 20, 2013 5:04 pm

Nice article man. Good read.
