hey golden boy stop protecting canelo!! trout is the proper opponent… who wants to see canelo vs cotto… trout dominated cotto and earned the respect of many boxing fans.. canelo has not fought anyone!! stop protecting canelo and put the fight together!!

Posted December 5, 2012 1:14 pm

when you’re a champion you need to fight the winner of such fights, not the loser…..Cotto a great fighter (with too many wars) is no longer in the picture unless he wins another big fight

Posted December 5, 2012 12:26 pm

Exactly fRANK; he is a great fighter but his best days are gone; and all he is now is just a boxer who was once great but because of his past greatness he still has a large following and therefore anyone who fights him will be a part of a big bill and stand to make great money and to have a legend’s name on their record once they beat him; but he is done as far as being one of the CURRENT ELITE. Canelo PROVES NOTHING BY FIGHTING HIM JUST LIKE HE PROVED NOTHING FIGHTING MOSLEY. They are BOTH DONE!!!!!

Posted December 5, 2012 2:22 am

no one is saying cotto is or wasnt greatt but he now has lost 2 big fights in a row. what will alverez as a champ prove by beating cotto at 154 . now if he beats trout that would prove more

Posted December 5, 2012 12:39 am

@TE TUMBO; what’s up bro. All due respect; but how can you still clammer for a match between Cotto and Alvarez when you’ve stated you feel Cotto isn’t top notch at 154? Isn’t the sole purpose of wanting to see fights is because we believe they are competitive and we want to see who the better man is? Let’s be real here; the cat is out the bag; we all know what Cotto has left especially after this past weekend!!!!!

Posted December 4, 2012 10:53 pm

They all talk of retirement after a loss. But 99% of the time, it seems, they only retire when the money fights go away. Perhaps Cotto will be in the 1%, but watch what happens, and what you hear, if Cotto can score a [big-money] fight with Alvarez. My prediction: ‘I’ve rededicated myself to boxing’ — ‘I know I can beat Alvarez.’ And, honestly, I wouldn’t count Cotto out. Alvarez is very good, but not great.

TITOPA, the difference is that i didn’t need the loss v. Trout to detect Cotto’s uncertainty and lack of confidence at 154lbs. in fact, i was asserting that Cotto would be demolished by Canelo beFore last Saturday’s bout while you asserted that Canelo hadn’t “paid his dues” or “earned” a shot v. Cotto like Trout had(?!?). of course, you knew i was right all-along and were simply desperate to deprive the Mexican Alvarez of the opportunity to collect Cotto’s scalp first. however, as long as Cotto insists on remaining active, he remains in Canelo’s crosshairs and the most lucrative matchup out there compared to the list of other 154lbrs, including Trout. after all, defeating the ringworn 154lb-version of Cotto does not result in undisputed 154lb primacy. perhaps Trout should take a page from Mares’ or Guerrero’s fight book and challenge Kirkland, Molina, or Lara to solidify his claim to the 154lb throne? otherwise, assuming a pouty posture and lapsing into inactivity is the opposite of “paying dues” and “earning” a shot and will only play into the 22-year-old Canelo’s long-term career plan. after all, unlike his 154lb peers, time is on his side, and he’s in no rush to prove ANYthing to ANYbody.

Whoa slow down on this trout bandwagon for a sec, I did pick trout to beat cotto but lets not start crowning him as an elite fighter, this is ONE fight against a solid but already ring worn fighter in cotto, remember how you writers and groupies claimed after watching ONE fight of alsemo moreno defeating darchinyan claiming moreno was top ten p4p and that no way a fighter like mares could touch him and how did that turn out? trout deserves his props but dont get carried away

Posted December 4, 2012 6:58 pm

Patrick2 – Yeah, we (you and I) might not think there’s anything wrong with that…but we’re not the ones fighting and sacrificing our personal (out of ring) lives to compete and maintain an elite status. I just think, a fighter who is on the brink of retirement (or at least speaking on it) and loses a fight he truly wanted/needed to win, will not fight the same again. Cotto is an emotional dude, you can tell, every time he speaks about his family or retiring from boxing, he chokes back tears, I truly feel the end of very near, if not, here. Whether he chooses to retire or not is up to him, of course, but I feel he should or would.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:56 pm

My point is there isn’t anything wrong with losing to top-level fighters. ALL it proves is that you’re a cut below — there’s no shame in it, and it is NOT the sole reason a fighter should use to make a retirement judgement. If Cotto decides to fight on, I have no doubt (no pun intended) that he will still be a force to be reckoned with for anyone at 154.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:42 pm

Patrick2 – Well, he just lost to Floyd too…..and just ’cause Floyd is arguable P4P #1 doesn’t mean that loss doesn’t count, or should affect Cotto. I personally think that Cotto isn’t/won’t be the same fighter anymore, like he said “retirement is pretty close”….and now losing a fight he HAD to win? I’d say he’s ‘passed it’.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:34 pm

And JUST prior to his fight with Trout, Cotto was considered an elite fighter — a guy that was legitimate competition for the very top PfP fighters? So, in other words, lose ONE fight and SUDDENLY you are in decline, and/or you should retire. That’s BS! There are many more factors to determine that than just A lose.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:29 pm

Patrick2 – I think he is….not completely passed it, but he’s definitely slipped. I think he’s already semi-retired and after this loss, I don’t think that ‘fire’ will be there anymore.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:20 pm

Why is Cotto “passed it?” Because he lost a fight? Why are you guys so anxious to write top-level fighters off after a loss? It was just a bad match-up for Cotto and against a guy who is “no doubt.”

Posted December 4, 2012 6:16 pm

te tumbo – I didn’t AT ALL agree with Canelo’s “choice” of fighting Lopez….BUT, at least he fought the winner of the bout, and not the loser. But now, we have the WINNER (Trout) who’s mostly likely gonna be over looked because he’s in fact a true 154lb fighter who’s a threat? Typical.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:14 pm

te tumbo – I pick who I feel will win, I ever pick a fighter because of his race. What I’m saying is, I feel Cotto is passed it, I felt that if he did well against Trout and came out victorious, he might be able to get back to his elite status. I wanted Canelo to fight Cotto last year when he “won” his title, and I said that Cotto’s resume was/is FAR greater than Canelo’s, and it CERTAINLY is. Had Cotto won, yes, a fight with Canelo would make some sense, there would be TWO titles on the line and Canelo could/would FINALLY fight an elite level titlist at 154….which now, happens to be Trout, so…again, why Cotto? Who JUST fell victim to the elite level titlist at 154. Now that Cotto has LOST, and will mostly likely reconsider his career, Canelo thinks “it’s time”? Hahaha! Well sure it is, a semi-retired fighter who just lost a fight he HAD to win.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:11 pm

Yeah te tumbo even supports that slob Arreola desppite the fact he weeps like a right c–t when he loses. And store that rAZA crap where it will do you the most good, homber. This is America now!

Posted December 4, 2012 5:45 pm

Cotto is NOT done! Geeze, the guy loses a fight against a solid opponent and suddenly he should retire? Give me a break! Cotto just gave Mayweather a good fight, REMEMBER? Heck, Mosley lost a number of times, came back a number of times, and proved he plenty left a number of times. Trout is just a big, well-schooled jr. middle — there is no disgrace in losing to him. That said, Cotto doesn’t deserve a fight with Alvarez, Trout should get that fight. And I’m betting on Trout to win.

TITOPA, based on recent results, YOU’re the most ignorant “Mexican” fan out there. after all, YOU’re consistently WRONG with your analysis of every matchup involving a Mexican fighter (probably because you always chose them to lose). just recently you were arguing that Cotto was a reach for Alvarez. now you’re agreeing with me that Cotto is not even in Canelo’s league because of one loss to Trout(?). Wtf were you basing Cotto’s superiority on in the first place? NOT having faced any prime and dangerous comp at 154lbs? in which case, the very same criticism you’re directing at Alvarez today seems to have been the basis of your regard for Cotto yesterday(?!). otherwise and according to your previous logic, a loss for the legendary Cotto should place him right in the path of an unproven and “protected” prospect like Canelo. otherwise, YOU’re all Over the F’n place with your ignorant antics. the only consistent element of your posts is the hate and contempt you have for Mexican fighters as if it’s their fault that you’re only “Mexican”(?). in fact, you have the Raza’s blessing to opt-out. after all, purging our society of self-loathing mutts like yourself remains a primary objective for those who believe that everything Mexican is beautiful and worthwhile, i.e., the opposite of self-loathing. I will continue to support “Mexican” fighters like Marquez, Garcia, Mares, Guerrero and not worry about whether or not you think it’s only because they’re “Mexican”, which is moot as long as they continue to win and prove me Right and You ignorant.

Posted December 4, 2012 5:39 pm

Trout said most of the rounds were close and Floyd said Cotto was his toughest fight which crushes all the moronic opinions at this site peace

Posted December 4, 2012 5:04 pm

Of course he does, keep feeding the hype machine & you’ see how it’ll turn out.

Posted December 4, 2012 4:33 pm

Canelo WILL NOT fight someone who has a chance of beating him….I repeat, he WILL NOT!!!! Threats are against his policy right now. It’s all about getting the ignorant Mexican fans to jump on the “world champion” train in order to make $$$. I’m not buying it. I was excited to see Canelo become a champion, but right now, he’s a guy who won his title fighting a Welterweight and he’s ‘defended’ it against C level fighters….most who were out of his weight class. That’s….BOGUS!!!

Posted December 4, 2012 3:56 pm

te tumbo – hahaha! Wow dude…you’re far more delusional than I thought.. Yes, I wanted Canelo to fight Cotto (way before the fight with Trout was made), but not anymore….Cotto showed his age against Trout and I think he’s done, you’ve felt Cotto was done (or not elite at 154) for a long time, but now after losing you want Canelo to fight him, why exactly? Makes no sense. Cotto NOW is no longer a threat at 154, so I guess it’s only right for Canelo to fight him eh?? Typical. So, if Trout (a titlist) beating Cotto didn’t mean much (according to you), then what business does Canelo have fighting Cotto?

Posted December 4, 2012 3:53 pm

te tumbo – Why fight the man who lost?? You wanted Canelo to fight Cotto to prove that Cotto isn’t an elite 154lber…well guess what, Trout (a titlist) just proved that he himself IS a true elite 154ber and that Cotto’s best days are behind him…So, why would Canelo fight Cotto?? To prove…what exactly??

Posted December 4, 2012 3:49 pm

te tumbo

TITOPA, just last week you were insisting that Canelo was not in Cotto’s league(?!). now, just because he was defeated by Trout, you must be completely transparent about simply wanting to protect Junito from a beatDown by the Mexican Alvarez. Admit-It: that was always the Real reason you objected to an Alvarez v. Cotto matchup. anyway, Cotto would’ve proven nothing by defeating Trout (which was the plan) and Trout hasn’t proven anything by defeating the Name of Cotto. the only hand strengthened in this equation is that of Canelo who is in the driver’s seat when it comes to PPV matchups. moreover, if he did nothing but blatantly cherrypick for the next three years, he would still be years ahead of Lara’s or Trout’s current career trajectory. TIP: you better load up on the piss because Canelo can and will do whatEVER the F’k he wants with impunity for the foreseeable future and you’ll ante-up for the privilege to watch it (lol) . . . how Sweeet it is . . .

Posted December 4, 2012 3:26 pm

It doesn’t surprise me AT ALL that they want to push Cotto-Canelo down out throats… I remember when Paul Williams beat Cheato Rito—it drew a full house. Arum immediately said, “A Williams-Cotto fight is OUT … NOBODY wants to see it.” … Right.

We pay … you decide

Let’s not go with the winner if he’s not your boy. You taught De La Hoya well.

Posted December 4, 2012 3:23 pm

Let Canelo continue to face NON CHAMPS all he wants. HE will remain as a Prospect while Broner is a legitimate CHAMP.

Posted December 4, 2012 3:12 pm

I hope Cotto decides to retire…he’s done and that’ll leave Canelo no other choice but to face a legit titlist/threat at 154.

Posted December 4, 2012 2:57 pm

te tumbo – Martinez is fighting in April….if Canelo truly wanted that fight, they couldn’t made it work for May. But do you honestly think Golden Boy will risk their “man” against the Argentinian?? NO WAY!!! TOO much of a threat…..Mayweather?? Won’t happen. Trout?? Won’t happen. Lara?? Won’t happen. Martirosyan?? Won’t happen. Face it….Canelo will fight a guy he WILL surely beat. That guy isn’t on this list.

Posted December 4, 2012 2:55 pm

Canelo and his camp see a threat in Trout….therefore, they WILL NOT fight him, PERIOD!! Look for Canelo to face opponents he WILL beat for the next few years…..he will NOT face someone who ‘can’ beat him, he needs guys he WILL beat. It’s pretty simple. Why face a titlist when you can fight the guy the title just beat?? ’cause he’s Canelo.

Posted December 4, 2012 2:49 pm

hahaha!! Of course….it’s Canelo, he needs a SURE win opponent in order to fight.

Posted December 4, 2012 2:46 pm

At first I thought O HELL NO… but then I started thinking more about and I came to a conclusion that this is the best thing for BOTH fighters(Canelo and Cotto).. It’s good for Canelo because if he can’t beat Cotto, then he certainly does not belong with the elite.. and It’s good for Cotto in a sense that Cotto needs to know if he belongs in the ring at all. This fight makes PERFECT sense in the wallet as well..for all parties involved..JUST SAYIN’

Posted December 4, 2012 2:00 pm

I have to admit as a Alvarez and watching his career grow, I think its a mistake to fight Cotto and he needs to beat Trout now! People will talk! Also its a easy win and another way to get the belt!

Posted December 4, 2012 12:58 pm

For the record ive always said Canelo was to big and would likely beat Cotto but Cotto had a chance to outbox him because of his superior skills. I also always said that he wasnt a jmw and didnt want him fighting there. Ive always said he didnt have the size to compete with the Martinezs, Laras, Kirklands and Angeulos of the world. Bout time the rest of u get up to speed.

“Just another big payday before he hangs them up IS WHAT I SEE COMING!!!!” Octavius, try to remember: Cotto FIGHTS for his money. Nothing has ever been a gift to that man. So he gets another big payday. He’s earned it. I just hope the end justfies the means.

How in the hell can fighters like Trout become marketable when you have these CROOKED PROMOTERS like GBP Schaeffer who don’t give them the opportunity to be seen. Trout DESERVES this fight. He beat Cotto fair and square on his home turf. I personally didn’t appreciate what Cotto said at the end of the fight when he was asked if he felt the decision was fair. Of course the crowd is going to boo; because in their hearts they wanted Cotto to win. He was the favorite going in. Deep in his heart he knows he lost that fight. But let him fight Canelo. He will get KTFO because he no longer has it in him to compete at the elite level. I had that fight scored 117-111 for Trout. Cotto did not land any real combinations in that fight. He landed a few shots here and there; but you cannot win rounds just landing on or two blows especially when your opponent is peppering you with jabs and outboxing you. He will be nothing but a NAME on Canelo’s record and that is sad for boxing. I have lost all respect for GBP. All they care about is making money. They know damn well Canelo is going to destroy Cotto and that is a sad way for such a warrior who has given so much to the sport to go out. Congrats to Trout; and I pray he gets his day to shine and his victory isn’t continued to be OVERSHADOWED BY GREED!!!!!!

This is no diffrent from Morales fighting Pacquiao after coming off a loss to Raheem and Judah fighting Floyd after getting beaten by Carlos Baldomir and Oscar fighting BHop after getting embarrassed by Felix Sturm..I don’t like it but boxing is a business first and you got to get it while the getting is good..Miguel Cotto can still say no to this fight and prove to his fans he’ll do what’s right and not just slap them across their face and go for the money..G’ I wonder what route Junito is going to take..Lol!

Let the matchmaker make some money, they know who is marketable and who isn’t.
It’s obvious that Trout is not that marketable. Additionally, Alvarez needs a bit more exposure to the US and what Schaefer is doing is conducting business as he should.

Annie fans should be embarrassed this lil chocha is still trying to fight Cotto its odvious his face doesn’t hold up well no more after the great warrior fought another chocha who had to lace his fist because he new he was thoroghly outclassed. Cant wait till Annie finally moves up to jmw and gets spanked. Lopez said it best no one would care about Annie if he wasnt a redhead freckle face who looks like the Americans gbs trying to sell him to. Dude can beat Cotto he’ll never be in his class.

Btw, after losing v. his designated opponent, i seriously doubt that Cotto can be convinced to step into a boxing ring and face Alvarez. even before his loss to Trout i was certain that he would be utterly deMolished by Canelo. i don’t think Martinez will be ready by May 2013 and i’m not interested in Mayweather spoiling the fun at 154lbs again. IMO, Kirkland has first dibs followed by Trout and Molina. i’m confident that Alvarez will face at least one or perhaps two of these opponents in 2013. depending on whether or not Cotto agrees to be the Cinco de Mayo sacrifice to Huitzilopochtli who craves nothing more than the smoking hearts of vanquished warriors.

not surprised. just because Team Cotto bungled the matchmaking and sabotaged their next PPV payday Alvarez isn’t content to let Trout steal all of his thunder. if this matchup is confirmed, look for Canelo to utterly deMolish Cotto within eight rounds. meanwhile, Alvarez will be peaking for the next six years so time is on his side. he can fight Cotto next and still have time to face the likes of Trout (IF he remains undefeated), Martinez, Lara, Angulo, Martirosyan, Thurman, Kirkland, before he even hits his prime. in fact, it’s quite possible that Alvarez will be working through a third generation of opponents when he finally does peak and achieves true greatness. boxing fans might as well get used to it. i have a feeling that Canelo has his own timetable and could care less what his critics and detractors are demanding. his fans are satisifed to sit back and watch the spectacle slowly unfold because unlike other young phenoms, there is no fear or uncertainty about Saul’s staying power. potential rivals should prepare to match it by remaining active and undefeated just like Alvarez. that’s the surest path to the threshold of Canelo’s office.

Posted December 4, 2012 10:52 am

Schaefer is an idiot. Why would you reward Cotto when it’s Trout who should get that fight? I agree. Fans should be up in arms and let Golden Boy know they want what’s best for boxing… not Golden Boy’s pockets.

cotto has lots of puerto rican fans and is a big ppv draw so brings more money end of story!! these snakes are all about money forget who wins or loses of deserves it… If Hatton won the other day I wouldn’t be surprised if he was next cause its all about fanbase!!

Posted December 4, 2012 9:04 am

If Canelo fights Cotto instead then I am convinced that he’s just interested in beating big names who are near the end of their careers. Golden Boy knows that at this point Trout is more of a threat to Canelo.

It seems someone discovered the Mississippi, boxing is a sport, an entertainment and money rules. Surprised?

Trout is a threat and Canelo will probably not fight him. 250 Amateur fights. this guy means big problems for Canelo. Look for Cotto early 2013!

It would be a travesty if Alvarez was to fight Cotto & not Trout. I read in an interview that Canelo wanted legendary status & if that’s the fact then he’s gotta prove himself as #1 @ 154Lb! Alvarez/Trout could be the biggest fight of 2013 if it could be arranged.

Posted December 4, 2012 6:01 am

Kid Blast

Canelo would butcher Cotto. It would be legal murder. Cotto’s thin legs are gone and his face breaks up easily now. Once he feels the red head’s thudding blows, he will back up as if “The Ghost of Marg” were present. This kind of crap affirms that boxing is no longer a sport but is simply entertainment where money rules.

Posted December 4, 2012 5:59 am

Canelo should fight Cotto, the kid is still young let him get another fight or two under his belt before he takes on the p4p guys, why rush a young fighter an get him blown off track like they did with Fernando Vargas against Trinidad, Canelo is only 22 Mayweather would have got beat fighting De La Hoya at that age as it was Mayweather only beat a old De La Hoya on points

Posted December 4, 2012 5:32 am

Cotto is too small at light middle anyhow, he’s a true welterweight who spent the peak of his career at light welter as as welter. now in the more twilight of his career he finds it too difficult to make the weight and has to fight at a weight where he looses the physical attributes he had at the lower weights.

Alvarez should be fighting the winner of the Cotto/Trout match, not the loser. I believe the Alvarez camp has some serious concerns about “No Doubt” Trout. They don’t want “Canelo” exposed, so they’re trying to protect him. Calling out the loser of the fight is plain ridiculous.
