te tumbo.., You have a much larger pool of athletes playing in sports like baseball, football, and basketball than you do in boxing. Boxing is my favorite sport, but that’s just a fact. We keep producing great pro boxers, but it’s amazing based on the talent pool.

40 or 50 million kids play organized team sports in high school and college, compared to less than 1000 college boxers.. You’re lucky to have a pool of 30 thousand amateur boxers all together.. You don’t have any 7 foot boxers with 100 inch reaches in Boxing—those guys are playing basketball. Wilt Chamberlain almost got a title fight with Ali having never pulled a glove on, because he was so big and athletic 7’1” X 295.

Randy Couture was 6 years older than James Toney, and a grand daddy… so it’s not as if they were matching Toney tough in MMA. It was JT’s 1st MMA fight. MMA fighters are nobody to fk with. Toney couldn’t get a lick on the 47-year-old Couture.

And MMA fighters who are super good aren’t going to switch to Boxing… That makes no sense… They’d be wasting all their training in 6 combat disciplines.

TARK, YoU cited the Toney example as if it meant something about the difficulty of competing in the MMA. Toney was an ATG (albeit severely-faded) boxer. besides, there isn’t a PRIME MMA fighter that would fare any better trying to become a serious title-contender in boxing in ANY division and the MMA fighter who could would be the exception to the rule. as for the NFL argument(?), that’s always on stand-by when somebody’s preparing to question the caliber of athletes in boxing, as if MMA or NFL were any better . . . for Boxing.

I think Canelo takes Lara into the deep and will TKO him late. Just sayin.

Posted May 7, 2014 9:14 pm

mma. lmao.

Posted May 7, 2014 4:29 pm

te Tumbo says.., “Why haven’t any prime MMA fighters made the transition to boxing? Exactly. next Tark will be hauling out the old, stale, and discredited argument that the best boxers are going to the NFL. yeh(?). tell that to Seth Mitchell.”

I never said the best boxers are going to the NFL. WTF are you talking about??? And you completely misrepresent the facts, as usual.

Seth Mitchell didn’t play in the NFL. He wrecked his knees in college and turned to Boxing. He learned to punch, but obviously can’t defend himself well. He became a ranked main event fighter at one point. It’s not real successful but 90% of boxers never get that far.

And why would a successful MMA fighter turn to Boxing???

90% of MMA combat training doesn’t even involve boxing. MMA gloves are very tiny.l. You’re really not learning a whole lot about boxing with big padded gloves in MMA training.

It’s like saying why don’t more NBA players try to play Major League Baseball? … Since they both throw a round ball around a lot.

You don’t like MMA.. That’s fine.. I don’t like hockey.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Best Ever)

If Canelo fights Lara like he did FMJ, he could very well lose this bout. Canelo’s game plan for that fight all was all wrong, and I’m sure he fully realizes that now and totally regrets it. Yes, he was definitely weight-drained and weakened by the B.S. catch-weight. But it’s almost like he thought he could stand in the middle of the ring and outbox the pure boxer with his speed, skill and technique. BIG mistake!

Alvarez should’ve relentlessly pressured and walked-down FMJ; trapping him on the ropes as often as possible, then dropped bombs. All Team Canelo has to do is keep watching film of Lara vs. Perro to get the blueprint on how to win this fight. Lara has a bad tendency to stall and become inactive when on the ropes. If Canelo keeps pushing forward and catching him there, he has a good shot at knocking him down more than once — or knocking him out. If he tries to out slick the “slickster” in the middle of the ring and fight on his heels, he’ll probably get outpointed.

But one thing is for sure: Canelo can stop Lara, but Lara cannot stop Canelo. The kid hits harder and has one h3ll of a solid chin. FMJ outright ducked Lara and will continue to avoid him if he wins this. Young Alvarez stepped up the plate like a real man with brass balls. This could be one of the best FOTY. Don’t miss it!

“Ask James Toney if MMA is legitimate..” is the absolutely worst argument in favor of MMA. in fact, a fat, past-his-prime, out-of-shape Toney can’t even compete in legitimate boxing any more. also, considering the larger paydays, why haven’t any prime MMA fighters made the transition to boxing? Exactly. next Tark will be hauling out the old, stale, and discredited argument that the best boxers are going to the NFL. yeh(?). tell that to Seth Mitchell.

Whenever someone just scoffs at something without trying to understand it, it shows how ignorant they are. MMA is a legit sport and not just WWE entertainment.

There’s plenty Boxing could learn from MMA. Like having only 1 champ per division. By making the best fight the best. By putting on entertaining shows.

Posted May 7, 2014 11:20 am

I am a huge boxing fan and will watch anything boxing-related, but MMA does not hold my interest for 10 seconds and never will. Not sure of the reasons, but MMA is like soccer to me, or watching Glee – just not remotely entertaining

Amir Khan has been studying MMA as shown by his illegal arm bars and holds he did in the Colazo fight. Ref Dracula Draculich was a total waste of space. Khan should have been DQ’d.

CurlyQ.Howard says…, “The more I study MMA (especially the UFC version), the more I see it as entertainment and not as a legitimate sport (yes, just like pro wrestling).”

What planet are you from?

Ask James Toney if MMA is legitimate.. Toney didn’t last a round fighting somebody 6 years older than him. The fight was a joke.

With the small gloves in MMA you can’t afford to get hit.. You can strike with elbows, forearms, knees, feet, fists, hammer fists, back fists, throw on arm bars, choke holds, and 2 dozen other submission holds. You get points for takedowns, wrestling, boxing, knockdowns from any strike that’s legal, so the training is pretty intense…

There’s a lot to learn besides boxing, which they also learn. A lot to cover.

Watch the Mayweather vs Big show spectacle!!! very entertaining! good WWE acting on the part of mayweather!

Posted May 6, 2014 11:50 pm

I must admit that the more I study MMA (especially the UFC version), the more I see it as entertainment and not as a legitimate sport (yes, just like pro wrestling). For some time now Pride has been exposed as having fixed fights far more often than legit fights. How long before the UFC et al are exposed for the same?

Posted May 6, 2014 10:56 pm

Chris Chambers

That’s a fight to look forward to!

Posted May 6, 2014 10:27 pm

MMA is garbage and does not need to take any notes from them.

Another sad day for Pactards

@PERRO – I do pay for fights. Guess I’m not as rich as you.

I recently went to the UFC on FOX show in Orlando last month. My first ever live UFC event. It was a 7 hour event. 13 fights in all and all the preliminary fights were great. Boxing should learn a thing or two from UFC.
Now, that’s getting my monies worth.

Yeah good luck watching a sport where anybody can take up mma and become a house hold mma fighter.
A fake wrassler from the wwe become the UFC. Champion with only five mma fights.
You would never see a boxer best the best fighter at his sport with only five fights. Just proves how mediocre mma is on talent level. Those mma boys make peanuts compared to boxers. UFC is a promotional company. There’s more money to be mad in boxing then mma . The only throng boxing needs to learn from UFC . Is well nothing.

I think Lara doesn’t have a chance against Canelo, Canelo is a great fighter and has a heart of a warrior .. I don’t expect this fight to go the distance which will only elevate Canelo’s status in the game and in his career , I think Canelo will rule for sometime and i see him and Maidana having a few wars in the future… …”The Language of the Ring “

Canelo should make easy work of Lara IF he doesn’t try and impress with only his boxing skills AND learned the important lesson from his loss to Floyd and Maidana’s recent performance: Think long, think wrong, i.e., THROW PUNCHES and don’t worry about looking good or elite while you’re doing it. it’s what almost earned Angulo the KO v. Lara and what earned an unofficial “W” for Maidana v. Floyd. Canelo by TKO.

Lara by School HOUSE decision.

Posted May 6, 2014 8:30 pm

This fight has potential to be an instant classic. Lara has been knocked down only to get up and win fights. Canelo has had some problems when he steps up in class. Canelo was dominated by Mayweather and had problems closing out the Trout fight. They both feel they have something to prove and will try their best to prove themselves. Hope the undercard makes it PPV worthy.

Posted May 6, 2014 8:26 pm

Jay rock

What’s the undercard?

Posted May 6, 2014 8:12 pm

This will surely put boxtra to bed, he is all over Lara but he will be stopped

Posted May 6, 2014 7:41 pm

Picking Alvarez to win this by late stoppage. They stated that every Alvarez fight this year is gonna be on PPV.

Posted May 6, 2014 7:41 pm

I was excited about this fight until I learned it was PPV. It should not be. This could be a great fight though. Lara will be busier and more technical, but Canelo is very strong at the weight. Based on Lara nearly being ko’d by Angulo, I guess I lean to Canelo by ko.

Posted May 6, 2014 7:27 pm

KATO …. im poor to, but im a boxing fan and i like to pay for exciting fights

Posted May 6, 2014 5:52 pm

Dan D

A good fight between the 2nd and 3rd best Jr Middleweight fighters. Mayweather has already shown that he is vastly superior to Alvarez. I’m picking Lara by decision.

Posted May 6, 2014 5:19 pm

Base on this photo alone, the heavy bag also beats Canelo.

Posted May 6, 2014 5:15 pm

how come the yanks love ppv.

I agree this should not be a pov fight. I will pay for fights but this is not one of them. Maybe if they charge $10 I will buy it. Other than that I will just read about it on here.

Posted May 6, 2014 3:51 pm

KATO never wants to pay for fights!

Posted May 6, 2014 3:43 pm

This is a pick-em fight. Canelo has the size and power to nullify Lara… but, Lara has the speed and style to make Canelo look amateurish.
We shall see… but I won’t be buying this PPV. This should be a free show on SHOWTIME…. let’s see if this one even cracks 300,000 buys.

Canelo ok Lara by round 6 or 8
Team canelo

Posted May 6, 2014 3:29 pm

Good matchup but of course it has to be PPV like almost everything else

Posted May 6, 2014 3:03 pm

good to see the mexican heavyweight back in the ring.

Posted May 6, 2014 2:52 pm

Culo peludo

D only way Canelo wins is if they take away laras bicycle before d fight starts.

Posted May 6, 2014 2:45 pm

Guess we will see. I still like canelo. Enjoy the fight my friend.

Posted May 6, 2014 2:37 pm

murderman – You do know that in boxing “styles make fights” right? Canelo beating Angulo ‘easier’ than Lara did means NOTHING.

Posted May 6, 2014 2:36 pm

Canelo by late rd k.o. He will be too strong for lara and wear him down. Remember lara barely beat angulo. Angulo crushed him w left hooks but just couldnt finish lara. Canelo will finish lara who is highly overrated

Posted May 6, 2014 2:24 pm

Hecdog…100% agree…Canelo will try to come in big and use his size advantage…but Lara is very talented and should be able to deal with any size differance.

Posted May 6, 2014 2:10 pm

No Canelo will come 20 to 25 pounds heavier than Lara
and out muscle him.

Posted May 6, 2014 1:20 pm

Erislandy Lara will beat Canelo Alvarez. Lara is too slick and talented. He will pick Canelo apart and have him swinging at air. Lara has a very decorated and experienced amateur background, and knows how to fight Canelo’s style of fighting. The fight against Angulo was good for Lara, he did what he was suppose to do. Lara wins this by unanimous decision unless the MGM and Las Vegas want their next cash cow to win because of Canelo’s popularity.
