When Ward said, “Dawson was a monster in there” it was meant to reinforce the idea that he was fighting a guy, who although a big underdog in the betting and considered by most to have little chance, was considered by a significant and vocal minority to a great boxer who would finally lay bare what they considered the flaws and weaknesses of Ward. That senario didn’t happen.. What he really meant was, “Give me a break doubters. I didn’t beat a chump.”

Hey moron learn boxing before posting stupid comments. Sergio Martinez is a Super Welterweight that means his best weight class is 154. He is fighting all these bigger guys at 160 because nobody with a big name wanted to fight him. Floyd Mayweather should fight him at 154 since he’s a champ at that weight class.

Posted September 11, 2012 11:40 am

Ward would win, he’s bigger and younger.

Posted September 11, 2012 10:56 am

sgt p

martinez already said on record he wouldnt fight ward because he is “to big” even though chavez jr is naturally 20 pounds heavier than wards walk arround weight

Posted September 11, 2012 7:35 am

Andre Ward should fight Anthony Dirrel or Sergio Martinez at 163……Ward drops 5 lbs., Sergio adds 5 lbs. – That amount of weight distributed around a guys body shouldn’t diminish either guys abilities and would be a great fight ! Huge draw !!! BUT……wouldn’t you be calling Sergio out if you know that the BIG $$$$ is right there at a catch weight 5 lbs below you ??? When asked who’s next he just said : “WHO EVER, just sign on the dotted line and I’ll fight them.” Didn’t mention Sergio. WHY ?? Because part of staying undefeated is knowing who to side-step. SMART GUY this Ward,

All this talk about dominant, best ever, hall of fame, blah, blah blah, is going to force Bernard out of retirement to kick Ward’s ass. !!
No doubt he’s studying films “right now ” ….

Posted September 11, 2012 7:18 am

Anthony Dirrel would beat the bejabbers out of Ward….

@ Robert Jackson the author guy: Mmmmmmmmbullshat!! Dawson coulda weighed 177 pounds and he still would’ve got the shat beaten outta him!!

Posted September 10, 2012 9:51 pm

Dawson said he wanted to fight THE best, so why would he want to come down to fight the second and third best at 168?

Posted September 10, 2012 9:41 pm

Well, you could say Dawson unraveled early, and got stopped late.

Posted September 10, 2012 9:06 pm

Must be our new societal norms (ie. fat and obese) because I sure as hell would NOT call Ward skinny at 168! My definition: more like “ripped, muscular, and buff.

Posted September 10, 2012 9:04 pm

After calling Ward a “monster in there” I really don’t think Dawson wants another helping of Andre, at any weight.

Posted September 10, 2012 8:59 pm

Dawson looked “drained” because he was getting beat up. Because prior to the fight everyone said he looked great — not weight-drained — and Dawson himself repeatedly said in lead up to the fight that the weight was NOT an issue. Plus, 7 pounds isn’t that much at that weight, not like it is for fighters, say under 147. In addition, Chad isn’t an old guy either. So I think the weight issue is moot. It was just a case of Ward being better and Chad get caught with shots he didn’t see coming — which are the ones that do the most damage.

Fight Aficionado

I predicted Dawson would unravel late in the fight and that’s exactly what happened, if a boxer saying “I’m done” is unraveling. Dawson’s weight loss was a factor but that’s only one part of it. Fact is Ward is stronger, more skilled, and mentally tougher than Dawson at any weight.

Posted September 10, 2012 7:31 pm

This fight can be boxings version of Pinks…..Chad came down to 168 to test his mettle now it otta be Andres turn to test his by meeting Chad at his weight. As for Ward going down any lower than 168 i think would challenge him tremendously. Ward looks skinny as it is at 168 any lower I think he depleats himself too much. My son is 6’2″ and weighs 170 and played basketball through his jr high and high school years if he lost 10 pounds he would probably exahaust himself running up the court.

rjack58… Cotto hit Mayweather better and more consistently than anybody else in the last 10 years.. Cotto bloodied Floyd’s nose and surprised Floyd at times.. Floyd told Cotto he was the toughest opponent he ever faced in his life.. Whatever Cotto “meant” when he talked about the difficulty in hitting Floyd, it wasn’t the message conveyed by this author, which was, “Cotto famously said following his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. “I tried to hit him, but I couldn’t” That is not what Cotto tried to say.. He knows he hit Floyd pretty damned good, and more than almost anyone else. Although Floyd is a great boxer and won the fight by a wide margin on my scorecard. He’s the best boxer ever, which wasn’t my point.

The Mad Scientist

We’ll get a better idea if Chad was weight drained or not in Andre Wards next couple of really wont matter thow, Ward won and Dawson lost and that’s the end of it..

Posted September 10, 2012 3:35 pm

Dawson wasn’t right after the headbutt. But we did find out he’s crap at 168! Regardless how good Ward is.

Posted September 10, 2012 3:18 pm

Atleast Dawson had the balls to go down to 168 to challenge Ward. It didnt work out for him, but he gave it a go. Thats what boxing is all about, testing yourself. Lets see if Ward has the balls to go down to 160 to challenge the likes of Chevaz vs Martinez winner, Geale or Golovkin. There is nothing at 175 for him.

Posted September 10, 2012 3:12 pm

Froch will give him a better payday than Tavoris Cloud or Jean Pascal!!

Posted September 10, 2012 3:04 pm

WE CAN argue whether it was the WEIGHT all day long…I’ll BET ANYONE that Dawson NEVER AGAIN fights at 168lbs!! That RIGHT THERE will tell you if it was the WEIGHT or NOT!! If it’s NOT the WEIGHT maybe he’ll drop down and face Froch or Kessler!

Posted September 10, 2012 3:03 pm

Tark…yes he did say ‘sometimes’ but he didn’t have to SAY THAT AT ALL!! He was responding that it was very hard for him to hit Mayweather which was my point…Floyd was harder to hit than he EXPECTED!!

Posted September 10, 2012 3:01 pm

Dawson said the weight was not a problem.. I have to take his word for it.. He couldn’t land his jab and was outboxed all the way.. He was whipped by a better fighter.

Posted September 10, 2012 2:09 pm

Tark says – The weight didn’t beat Dawson – Tark have you ever loss weight like Dawson or Tarver did and box at 100 percent peak ??? I am sure Dawson can do alot more things if he was healthy in there. Another stupid comment by Tark.

Posted September 10, 2012 2:02 pm

It probably was the weight, but it was Dawson’s fault for saying he could go down to 168…. Ward is not a power puncher…He outworks and outsmarts his opponents…

Posted September 10, 2012 1:20 pm

If anybody is claiming that it was the weight that is Dawson’s fault… He called the man out (I don’t think Ward was thinking about Dawson)….. Challenged him for his 168 pound belts…. And got his ass whooped…. F#$% the excuses. He knew exactly what he was doing before his ass got handed to him.

Posted September 10, 2012 12:18 pm

rjack58…. Good video interview of Cotto’s thoughts.. Miguel said “SOMETIMES I couldn’t hit him.” Which is true of every boxer who ever lived versus any top opponent. Anytime you find somebody who lands 100% of his punches against a masterful boxer it’ll be God in disguise. Samson killed 4,000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass, so he was going pretty good, but I think he had help.

Posted September 10, 2012 11:41 am

The weight didn’t beat Dawson… He couldn’t land his jab so he didn’t fire it. Chad landed some nice right hooks early on, but not anything that Ward was concerned about, because Ward soon adjusted and landed his left hook simply by feinting jabs and waiting for the Dawson hook. Ward is very clever and Dawson is never going to beat him at any weight. Even with Chad coming out strong in the 1st round, it was evident that his jab was useless.

Why would another fight in Las Vegas or the East Coast matter? Ward beat Dawson with apparent ease and would have done so no matter where the fight took place. Oakland had nothing to do with the defeat of Dawson. It was foolish, prideful and stupid for Dawson (or anyone) to come down in weight to fight a top-level guy like Ward. How do you think that Pacquaio won so many of his fights? Catch weights should be eliminated. Marvin Hagler was excellent by staying at 160 lbs. No one should come down in weight for a payday and risk his or her health. Dawson was foolish-and so was his manager.

Cory Smith

Of course it was the weight. Dawson was not the same at this weight. Didnt even look like the same person out there. The weight beat Dawson not Ward.

jesus christ the saviour

in the end everyone gives props saying he strong and hard to hit .virgil is his matchmaker lets see next step

Martinez is a beast ! He will ahve to head WAYYYY UP to lose.

Posted September 10, 2012 10:54 am

Why is it that a loss “LEAVES A CAREER IN SHAMBLES ” ? Who are the best names in boxing history ? Ali- 5 losses, Leonard- 3 losses, Duran- 16 losses, Chavez Sr.- 6 losses, PACIOU- 4 losses, Bernard- 6 losses !! Chad Dawson ( TWO) ) losses ? So how do you figure his career is over ? Thats whats wrong with boxing today. This type of talk is why the top guys don’t fight each other more often and whats killing the game. So Ali lost to Frasier – was that the end of his career ? No because in those days you just said :Hey that was a GREAT FIGHT and did it again !! Nowadays you a guy like Ward wins and everyone CLAIMS he’s SOOOOOO Dominant that he WONT fight Chad again, figures it would just be a waste of time. However what if someone like Roach or Garcia takes Chad in and trains him to beat Ward ? You get a great fight, perhaps with a different result….

This author writes, “Cotto famously said following his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. “I tried to hit him, but I couldn’t.” WTF??? Cotto never said that. Cotto thought he deserved the decision following the fight, and said so. How do you bloody somebody’s nose with sharp jabs if you can’t hit them??? What Cotto said, and it wasn’t a “famous” statement on his part, was, “I didn’t hit him with all the punches I wanted, but he knows and the fans know the kind of fighter I am.” ..A lot of fans booed the decision … Were they deluded Cotto lovers? Of course. What else is new in Boxing? But don’t pretend Miguel didn’t lay a glove on Floyd. That’s also deluded.

Martinez is 37 going on 38, there’s NOT the BIG money on the table to fight Ward like there is to fight Mayweather. Martinez will go after Mayweather AFTER he clobbers Chavez Jr.

Posted September 10, 2012 10:37 am

I’d love to see Martinez step up to 168 after he smashes Chavez this Saturday.

there has been TOO many comments about the weight loss…First: no one said anything about the weight issues when glenn johnson who is older and harder for him to lose the weight was asked to lose the same amount to participate in the super six, and he did a great job. Second: dawson said there was no problem with making the weight, because he never diets when he preps for fights, if he wants a burger and fries he gets that, this time he cut out the junk food and the weight came off easily, no different than when paul williams fought from 147-154-160, i do agree that ward can leave okland, however, like a devon alexander ward dispite his talents is still building his fan base, he dosent have the same base as a kessler, abraham, froch, least not yet. Third: ward made the point before the fight that dawson isnt fighting someone in their 40s, besides pascall that he lost, he has made a career at doing just that, his form, and combos looks smooth against older fighters but not against someone his age with more energy and faster than him. Lastly: dawsons corner should have stopped the fight WAY BEFORE chad did, now he is ruined because he knows his best isnt good enough for elite. im so used to seeing wards infighting, i forgot how GOOD his outside game really is, i think dawsons corner did to, he shut down dawson jab and out jabbed him, just like out muscled miranda, out streingth abraham, out bullyied froch, out overalled kessler who was the overall pick for the super six, the man is a natural talent he wasnt burning on all cylinders for any of those fights! i hate that he is so big, his in/out fighting fighting and adaptability would give floyd nighmares if they were close to the same size.

Bleu, thanx man oversight on my part. Dawson was down late in the Adamek fight.

Posted September 10, 2012 10:29 am

Dawson was down against Adamek in LHW

Posted September 10, 2012 10:14 am

Yes, he did a little weak in there, but Ward was constantly outjabbing him and exploiting his low right hand.

At best, Chad Dawson would of made it the distance @ 175lbs. He was never going to beat Andre Ward.
