Cotto vs Canelo is the pecfect match! I think it will be a fight of the year candidate.

i say Canelo is Pumped and Primed for the likes of Cotto, Kirkland, or Mayweather. Lara, Vanes, Angulo, or Quintana are either too green, too small, and/or less accomplished than the likes of Canelo and THAT’s what it is.

Your right vargas is like another victor ortiz

Posted August 5, 2012 10:06 pm

No, it’s just the facts, without the sugar coating. Smart boxers don’t slug it out. They use their skills to win fights. It’s the ones who realize they can’t win on their skills that often opt to slug it out in the hope they can land a big one and change course of the fight — sometimes it works and is better than being broken down and picked apart.

The Mad Scientist

At this point and stage I think Canelo beats Cotto just on size, strength, youth and ring smarts doubt Miguel will show the youngster a thing or two but I just don’t see Junito outboxing or outfighting Kid Cinnamon for most of the fight if it happens..

@mex I think Canelo is going to be the next Julio Cesar Chavez. He still needs a little more exposure I agree but aside from Mayweather or Pacquiao I don’t think there’s anybody out there who could beat him and if he waits a year then he could beat Pacquiao and then Mayweather in 2013!

Javier Urquiza

@Papo I made the comparison based on the Odds nobody expected Sanchez to beat Gomez including myself I thought Gomez was too powerful and we all know what happened. Canelo would clearly be the underdog against Cotto. Cotto is one of my favorite fighters right now not only inside the ring but also because he is such a nice guy who never bad mouths anybody (ala Macho Camacho). But Canelo is young and strong he packs a mean punch. I think Canelo punches harder than Margarito (even with his loaded gloves). If they were both in there prime Cotto would win for sure but at this stage in his career I don’t think he can go to war with such a young kid. Canelo by late stoppage or by a close but unanimous decision!

MEX, first you guys say that Canelo is still green and didn’t have much of a amateur career and bla, bla, bla.. and then you say that he’s ready for Mayweather?? Which is it?? What about the excuse that he’s too green, young, inexperienced (after SEVEN pro years??) for guys like Lara, Martirosyan but not for Floyd, huh? Which is it?? No, I’m not comparing Fernando to Canelo. The Vargas that entered the ring vs Tito would’ve probably whipped the Canelo that’s facing Josesito next month and the Canelo that you guys NOW say is ready Floyd.

True, unlike Alvarez, Vargas was ,moved along too fast, IMO. I agree, Canelo is a question mark with lost of potential. Fighting littler fighters probably won’t answer many questions.

Posted August 4, 2012 6:28 pm

No doubt Canelo has talent, but it’s too early to compare him to Sanchez. Sanchez fought some good fighters and could take a punch, while Canelo opposition has not been great and his chin hasn’t been tested.

Posted August 4, 2012 6:19 pm

Chapo, I see your point BUT…after SEVEN years of professional fighting that excuse has worn quite thin, basically no longer applies. You’ve been around this game long enough to know that many fighters had little or no amateur experience and stepped it up and SUCCESSFULLY faced the TOP talent of their division or have held ther own. Honestly, it’s a convenient excuse to avoid the TOP talent. A loss at this stage would destroy Canelo’s market value considerably, Oscar aint taking any chances until the PRICE IS RIGHT. Shadow of Vargas?? Well no, Fernando made his mark while Canelo is still a question (??) mark, with tons of potential. Time will tell.

And Cotto knows Canelo is todays Sal.Sanchez…or a bigger Salido..lmao.

Posted August 4, 2012 2:47 pm

Depending on who Cotto chooses,i may be in the building myself?

Posted August 4, 2012 2:27 pm

Canelo is just lucky there is no prime Tito Trinindad out there. he was Fernando’s boogy man

Posted August 4, 2012 2:24 pm

First i wanna say beautiful pic of Cotto poppin Floyd with the left lol. I will be in the building Dec. 1 so im hopin its Canelo.

Posted August 4, 2012 1:34 pm

First of all Canelo don’t need Cotto. He will get the mayweathet fight even if he never fights Cotto. And to compare Vargas and Canelo is just stupid. Canelo has skills and can box while vargas was just a brawler.

Posted August 4, 2012 12:32 pm

el chapo

EZ, Canelo and Fernando is not a comparison. Fernando had a celebrated amateur career and was expected to (and delivered) wins against top competition early in his career. Canelo learned on the job like a lot of mexican fighters and has been brought up much slower. Does that mean that at the end of the day Canelo’s career will be a shadow of Vargas’…of course not.

Posted August 4, 2012 12:05 pm

el chapo

Canelo needs Cotto clearly, and clearly Cotto does not need Canelo. So the only reason Cotto should fight Canelo is if he got paid 20 mill at least. Otherwise, he should go for the money – which is Money – since he out of anyone in the sport deserves to. However, I do like the matchup of Canelo and Cotto since it will answer many questions – especially where Canelo is at this point in his career. Canelo being the much younger and fresher of the two should be able to beat a battle worn Cotto – even if Cotto possesses the superiour skills. Of course, a young Cotto would smoke that arse, but a fight with Canelo could be a burner with Cotto finally hanging them up.

EZ-E is right in his comparison with Vargas. I stated that before and I say it again, Canelo needs more time or is going to end up worst than Vargas a “rocket that burned on re-entry”

Posted August 4, 2012 11:22 am

2bad, are you for real? “Cotto should fight Ortiz, Khan, Berto, Guerrero, Bradley even Hatton”. Do you know Cotto is fighting at 154 and the fighters you mentioned are in the 140 and 147 weight class?

Not to mentioned that Ortiz just lost to a Junior welterweight, Berto was caught cheating, Hatton has been out so long he’ll probably forgot how to box, Khan just lost to Garcia, proving he doesn’t have what it takes to beat any top 10 fighter and Guerrero still has work to do to prove he belongs.

Perhaps it was just a typo on your part.

Posted August 4, 2012 10:37 am

This is boxing. You don’t “slug it out” if you’re the one who has the superior boxing skills. You break your opponent down, slowly if need be. If you can’t appreciate that approach, perhaps you’re not a “boxing” fan.

Posted August 4, 2012 10:29 am

I think the only thing that stops Cotto is illegal hand wraps. Otherwise, I think the man will walk through fire, if need be, to get to round 12.

Posted August 4, 2012 10:24 am

i would like to see Floyd fight Paquiao, and try slugging it out with him to please the fans!

Posted August 4, 2012 8:04 am

finally someone that makes some sense

Posted August 4, 2012 7:46 am

Although I don’t believe that it will take place this year but if it does: if cotto wins then they’ll say that Canelo was an unproven WBC/Suliaman over-hyped fabrication that never defeated a quality fighter, which he hasn’t. Many compare Canelo to Fernando Vargas, which is a stretch from the truth. At this stage of Fernando’s career he had already WON and DEFENDED his title and DEFEATED a young top rated Winky Wright, a young (72-2) Yori Boy Campas, a young Raul Marquez and a still young and hungry Ike Quartey, all within the first THREE years of his career, age 22. Canelo, also 22, has been a pro for about SEVEN years and has no creditable wins that compare to Fernando’s.

Posted August 4, 2012 6:08 am

Cotto’s “competitive, hugely successful fight”!? The ONLY punch Cotto could hit Mayweather with was his jab, and the only reason he got that in is because Floyd wanted to please the fans buy slugging a little more with Cotto, thus making the fight more exciting. If Mayweather and Cotto fight again in December, Cotto IS GETTING STOPPED!

Posted August 4, 2012 5:39 am

Thats gonna be the fight of the year! Im from Puerto Rico but i wouldnt bet on that fight. I think cotto has the edge on experience and has become a better technical boxer. Canelo on the other hand young hungry and overall good fighther. Interesting for damn sure!

Dont be such a numpty, why does cotto need to fight any of them, especialy Khan and Hatton, thats just plain stupid!

Cotto is a CRIPPLE fighter he needs to fight fighters like Ortiz, Khan, Berto, Guerrero, Bradley even Hatton.

Posted August 4, 2012 1:04 am

Canelo vs Floyd would be a good fight.

Posted August 4, 2012 1:02 am

Canelo-Cotto would be huge, especially if it takes place in Madison Square Garden. Cotto is not getting any younger and it’s the perfect time to make some big bucks before retiring. If he beats Canelo, it’ll be huge and may translate into a big mega fight against Floyd or Pac. On the other hand, if he loses he can retire with his chin high knowing he had a great career. For Canelo it’ll be a chance to prove that he belongs with the best. If he wins, especially by KO, he’ll be front seat for big paydays. But it’ll be a risky fight for him and if he loses, it’ll be devastated.

Someone here compared this fight to Sanchez-Gomez, because of the way the late Sanchez destroyed Gomez. But I don’t see that at all. Gomez had a perfect record and the best KO percentage of any fighter. He, just like the majority of boxing fans, was confident (too confident) he’d ko Sanchez. Cotto, on the other hand, has lost three times and knows that a fight against Canelo will no be easy. Nevertheless, though Canelo has a chance, I will be rooting for my fellow countryman. Cotto by decision.

Cotto v Mundine would stop a nation down under…..every man and his dog would watch the fight bringing huge PPV revenue to the table…’s also a easy day at the office for Cotto

Posted August 3, 2012 9:52 pm

@ Joe The Mundine fight is a great option for Cotto as the risk v reward is all in Cottos favor.

Cotto deserves to make money and get an easy win, this is the fight.

It will be a repeat of Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez. Canelo will Knock Out the Great Miguel Angel Cotto and before you jump to Conclussions I am Mexican but I am a big fan of both of them. Of course I would be rooting for Canelo but I always root for Cotto in all his other fights including the first Margarito fight. Canelo by knock out and I am willing to put money on it!

Posted August 3, 2012 8:41 pm

I personally do not want too see this fight happen…Not now at least. Canelo does have alot to prove with regaurds too opposition, and I believe Cotto deserves a shot too avenge either of his lose’s too pacman or moneymay before he takes this kid on. I wanna see canelo take on a prepared, focused, and hungry James Kirkland.

I have much respect for Cotto. I wish him the best. Hopefully, he’ll get another big fight, soon.

Posted August 3, 2012 8:28 pm

Its going to be a repeat of Salvador Sanchez against Wilfredo Gomez. Canelo would be the underdog but on fight night he will bring his Mexican Heart and Knock Out the Great Miguel Angel Cotto. Those who dare to contradict me put your money where your mouth is!

Posted August 3, 2012 8:17 pm

Would love to see this happen, don’t think it will, at least not this year. However if it does I may be in the minority but I see Cotto coming out with the victory. If and only if, he does what he does best, body punches.

Posted August 3, 2012 8:16 pm

Yeah, as others have said, Canelo better be focussed on Lopez….

Posted August 3, 2012 8:05 pm

Exactly! he fought for a 154lb title against a guy who had NEVER fought above 147lbs…really? AND, Canelo failed to make the weight, really? But he’s a “champ”? Not really. He needs to step up his game, that hand me down “title” isn’t going to do much if you’re not fighting the BEST of the BEST!

Posted August 3, 2012 7:55 pm

Canelo’s the one who needs to fight EVERYONE and ANYONE close to the top, because he’s definitely NOT ready for the best of the best! yet, Cotto was there trading shots with one of the VERY best (Floyd) and did very well, Why can’t Canelo get that fight? Oh yeah, he’s “not ready”.

Posted August 3, 2012 7:53 pm

Cotto vs “the welter Floyd”?? Canelo is a dried out middleweight fighting a blown up 140lber LOL. C’mon! Canelo has no TURF, he’s riding a hand me down title and just came off fighting a 40yr old Mosley. Pshh!

very true, Cotto is not a 154 but 147, clown ass Mundine might gives him 12 rounds of homework.

Posted August 3, 2012 7:30 pm

Trout brings zero money to the table….I mean nothing… record as a PPV fighter…..Cotto wants money not titles

Posted August 3, 2012 7:25 pm

Cotto should fight former 2 time world champ Anthony Mundine 44-4….easy win for Cotto

Mundine brings a good record and millions of PPV revenue in Australia…in addition to this Mundine made some thoughtless comments about 911…this fight being in New York would see a massive hate crowd fired up…good for marketing

Foreman, Mayorga, Margarito, and a convincing loss v. the welter Floyd hardly makes Cotto the most compelling 154lb contender. it makes no sense to insist on giving Cotto middleweight credit for his welter prime. if Cotto wants to plant his flag on Canelo’s turf, he needs to defend his spot and earn credibility v. the best and prime not retreads and fringe contenders.

If this fight happens, Canelo will put a beating on Cotto.

Posted August 3, 2012 7:14 pm

Cotto/Canelo would be a good fight for the fans, but I personally think Cotto should make him wait and earn a shot at a real title. Canelo has yet to fight a championship caliber opponent. Even when he won(or was given) his belt, his opponent was Mathew Hatton?! Seriously? A blown up Jr. Welterweight? Give me a break! As I always say, I don’t totally blame Canelo because I really think he would fight anyone, but GBP needs to step up to the plate and let this young man earn his accolades! At least let him fight one of the other legitimate Champions or Championship contenders (Trout, Bundrage, Lara, Kirkland, Angulo, Molina, Mundine) to prove he is really a Champion. Then and only then does he deserve a shot at the top of the class!

Seeing as how well Cotto did against Floyd (in a courageous losing effort), I feel he’ll do very well against an inexperienced Canelo, not saying he’ll “surely” win, but he has a great shot….Canelo’s been steered clear of Mayweather because according to his handlers (and team), he’s “not ready”….yet Cotto made it VERY tough for Floyd. We’ll see what happens. But Canelo surely should not be looking past the Jr. Welter that is Lopez.

Posted August 3, 2012 6:43 pm

Cotto is undersized and ringworn, which only magnifies Canelo’s advantage @ 154lbs and the longer Cotto waits the more the odds favor Alvarez, which probably means that this matchup doesn’t materialize in 2012 it won’t ever happen.

MINIMO, that’s not what i saw during the pre-fight hype or actual bout. if that’s what passes for “electricity” at NYC/MSG, they need to upgrade from 120 volt to 240 volt. it might as well have been Tokyo based on what i could see and hear and nothing like D.C., Vegas, or L.A. fight-crowds for similar or even less prominent bouts.

Posted August 3, 2012 6:27 pm

I agree! He’s being carefully matched and the title he “won” was given to him for marketing and bargaining purposes…I’m not sold on him, yet. He needs to step his game up and then we’ll see.

Posted August 3, 2012 5:57 pm

This new format stinks.

Posted August 3, 2012 5:46 pm

Canelo is another rocket that will burn on re-entry! Vargas had more technique and strength and look what happened. Canelo gets hit a lot and has less than average technique. He just overpower boxers. You can’t do that with elite boxers. Hold him a bit. Not ready yet.

Posted August 3, 2012 5:38 pm

Make this fight if canelo beats josesito! Gonna be a huge fight and a very interesting.
ps lousy new format esb

Posted August 3, 2012 5:13 pm

I agree. But quite honestly, his performance (although he lost) against Floyd was MUCH, MUCH better than I thought it would be….considering his tendency to cut and swell, I thought Floyd would chop him up, but Cotto showed up well prepared and did very well.

Posted August 3, 2012 5:05 pm

ZT- I’m with you 100%. Canelo is a completely different animal from Ortiz. This kid really seems to want it. He’s also a much bigger animal. Josesito has a lot of heart for sure, but he’s probably biting more than he can chew on this one.

Posted August 3, 2012 4:22 pm

Te Tumbo – I was there for Cotto-Margo 2 and the crowd was absolutely electric once that fight started. The only other time I’ve seen MSG any crazier than that, and I go to every fight card at the garden, was Tito vs. Mayorga.

Posted August 3, 2012 4:18 pm

Nope, I don’t believe it will be Canelo, not this year and not in Nerw York. From what I had been hearing Miguel is still interested in adding a fourth division to his legacy and knows that the clock is ticking. A fight with WBO 160Lb interim champ N’Dam N’Jikam was almost a done deal but regular WBO middle champ Pirog decided not to vacate. According to a Team Cotto insider the possibilty of a Cotto vs Alvarez fight will not come about until mid 2013.

Posted August 3, 2012 4:17 pm

i still do not think Cotto has ever looked quite the same after Cotto Margarito #1.

Posted August 3, 2012 4:16 pm

if Canelo gets by Lopez,i think he may be catching Cotto at the right time. near the end of Cotto’s career. this could be a passing of the torch type of fight with the young lion taking over from the old lion so to speak.

Posted August 3, 2012 4:14 pm

Glad Cotto is considering Canelo….it’s a good match-up of an established Jr. Middle vs an Up and Comer. I gotta go with Cotto, he looked VERY good in a losing effort to Mayweather, FAR better than I thought he’d do, that and his experience under the bright lights and his overall skill.

Posted August 3, 2012 3:52 pm

srminimo – I hear what your saying. But, I’m kind of worried about Canelo severly hurting Lopez during this fight (that shouldn’t even take place). A fight between Cotto and Canelo is just what the doctor ordered. Its just as exciting a fight as Martinez vs. JCC Jr.

Posted August 3, 2012 3:29 pm

te tumbo

Canelo should definitely remain focused because i’m very keen on a Alvarez v. Cotto matchup but NOT in MSG. i was particularly underwhelmed by the fight crowd during the build-up and actual bout between Cotto and Margarito. quiet, subdued, no passion whatsoever for the sport or even their fighter. compare that to the D.C. crowd for Peterson v. Khan and you’ll see what i’m talking about. That was a fight-crowd and perhaps the biggest consequence to Peterson’s dirty test.

Posted August 3, 2012 3:19 pm

Canelo better not start thinking about Cotto before sept. 15 or it could be Josesito facing Cotto in December.
