New Trainer for Hasim Rahman
05.01.07 - By Aaron King: Former two-time heavyweight titlist Hasim Rahman will start up the comeback road again, but this time, he’ll do it with a new chief second. According to manager Steve Nelson and ESPN.com, Rahman hired Marshall Kauffman of Reading, Pa. to help reestablish the 34-year-old on the championship scene. Kauffman, who used to train welterweight Kermit Cintron, replaces Thell Torrence.

Rahman, who has a history of frequent corner changes, met Kauffman while training for this title defense against Oleg Maskaev in August. Nelson told ESPN.com that he and Rahman formed a relationship at that time. Kauffman’s son, heavyweight prospect Travis (7-0, 5 KOs) was a sparring partner for the former champion.
Rahman (41-6-2, 33 KOs) was scheduled to fight Ray Mercer on a Feb. 22 Versus televised-card, but ESPN.com reports that German-based promotion group Universum contacted Top Rank about a possible bout with Luan Krasniqi. There are a couple of minor roadblocks yet to be worked out.
If that can happen, Top Rank’s Bob Arum said that the fight would be set for March.
