Holyfield Defeats Oquendo: Another Spirit Broken

11.11.06 - By Ted Sares: I watched the fight tonight and two things were crystal clear. 1) Evander Holyfield needs to retire right now and 2) Fres Oquendo won the fight. How the judges could give it to "The Real Deal" is beyond my wildest imagination. Sure, he knocked Oquendo down in the first round, but it was a flash knockdown that did no damage. In fact, Fres may have won the rest of the round..

To win a fight, you need to let your hands go, throw punches and land a few. Holyfield did neither. You think Quartey and Forrest was bad? This goes right along side and the surprised look on Ronnie Shield's face when the decision was announced affirms that notion more than any words can.

In the first fight on the under card, one of the may unknown (at least to me) judges somehow voted in favor of Elizondo over Navarro (who won handily) and this was a precursor of what was to come. The only possible way for Fres to have won that fight would have been by knockout.

While Fres may have not done much to enhance his reputation in San Antonio tonight, he did do one thing. He won the fight. Make no mistake of that.

This was a politically correct decision....and it was bile-inducing.
