Nikolai Valuev Interviewed by best known German swimmer

20.10.06 - Their names stand for excellence: Franziska van Almsick, the formerly best and still best known German swimmer, and Nikolai Valuev, the biggest and heaviest boxing champion of all time. Unlike the Russian giant, Franziska van Almsick is no longer an active athlete and is currently working on her second career as a journalist. She has already interviewed sports celebrities such as Boris Becker, Michael Schumacher or Roger Federer for the prestigious German paper "Welt am Sonntag". And now she has met with Nikolai Valuev in Berlin.

The champion took two hours out of his busy schedule to give an in-depth interview in the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Potsdamer Platz. Naturally, Franziska van Almsick was interested mostly in sportive and social subjects training procedure and ringside motivation as well as Valuev's childhood, home, family environment and of course the next generation. Nikolai's wife Galina is expecting their second child and Franziska van Almsick is pregnant as well.

"As a matter of fact, it was Muhammad Ali, who got me started in boxing", Valuev told the renowned reporter. "I moved away from home and into a sports boarding school at the age of 13. Back then I was in track and field. Often, my trainer would show us videos of Ali's fights in the evening I was fascinated to the point that boxing became both my sport and my passion."

The champ also clearly outlined his athletic goals: "Any world champion naturally dreams of winning all four belts and becoming the super champion of the world. That is, of course, a question of the right management but definitely a realistic goal from an athletic viewpoint."
