Boxing: And Coming Up...

12.09.06 - By Jim Amato: Some very interesting battles are coming up. On September 15th in London highly touted Junior Witter meets veteran DeMarcus Corley for the WBC 140 lb. title. Witter is a very talented fighter but I hope no one is selling Corley short. He's been in with some of the cream of the division. To the best of my knowledge there is no US television..

On the same day in Manistee, Michigan Joe Mesi continues his comeback against Jason Weiss. I understand that Joe needs a few easy fights to shake off the rust from inactivity. I hope in his next bout he takes on a B level guy. I think Mesi-Brian Minto would be a great fight for the fans. What do I think about Mesi's decision to continue boxing ? It's Joe's call. I wish him well and I pray for his safety.

Good PPV card on September 16th with the Marcos Antonio Barrera and Rocky Juarez rematch as the headliner. Rocky surprised a lot of people in his first match with Barrera, including Marcos. This time I think Barrera will be a little better prepared but I also think Juarez will come in more confident of his chances. I look for a real interesting contest but I'm going to go out on the limb and take Rocky. Sometimes fighters grow old over night. It has happened to great ones like Barney Ross, Carlos Ortiz, etc... It may happen to Barrera.

Excellent under card. Jorge Barrios against Joan Guzman for the WBO Super Featherweight title. Also Israel Vazquez against the streaking Johnny Gonzalez for the WBC Super Bantamweight title. I believe all three bouts will be shown. This one might be worth the bucks !
