Joe Calzaghe: Should He Fight Clinton Woods?

19.07.06 - By Jeff Bastasini: Based on the latest reports from the BBC, Joe Calzaghe is reportedly being offered 1.5m to move up in weight and fight Clinton Woods, the IBF light heavyweight champion. Before the fight can come off, however, Woods would first have to defeat Glen Johnson, who he's fighting on September 2nd. At this point, considering that Woods has previously fought to a draw with Glen Johnson in November 2003, and then losing a 12-round decision to him in February 2004, the chances for a bout with Calzaghe would seem remote, at best.. Further, Calzaghe - Woods wouldn't likely draw much interest from the American audience, as Clinton Woods (39-3-1, 24 KO's) isn't widely known in the U.S. and would be seen as merely an opponent for Calzaghe, despite Woods being an fairly accomplished fighter.

Clinton Woods, 34, was previously stopped in the 6th round by Roy Jones Jr. in September 2002, a fight that was one-sided with Jones dominating the action. Calzaghe would likely have very little trouble with Woods, and I see this as being an easy victory for him. I much prefer, though, that Calzaghe face someone like Roy Jones Jr. or Winky Wright, since they'd give him a much better fight and it would be popular worldwide.
