Alfonso Gomez from "The Contender" Headed to Canastota

CANASTOTA, NY – JUNE 2, 2006 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today Alfonso Gomez, one of the stars of the boxing reality show “The Contender” will attend festivities planned for the 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 8-11th. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Gomez turned pro in 2001 after registering an impressive amateur record of 80-10. In 2005 he was among 16 boxers to appear on the Sugar Ray Leonard and Sylvester Stallone boxing reality series “The Contender.”

Gomez, who is managed and trained by his father Alfonso, Sr., advanced to the semi-finals of the competition. Armed with a crowd-pleasing style and charismatic personality, the 25-year old Gomez has compiled a pro record of 14-3-2 (5 KOs). His most recent bout was an exciting 8-round draw with Jesse Feliciano televised live on ESPN.

“The Hall of Fame is looking forward to welcoming Alfonso Gomez to Canastota for the first time,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. "He’s an emerging star in the sport of boxing and fans will surely enjoy the opportunity to meet him."

The June 8-11th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events including the official induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2006. Living inductees to be honored at the Official Induction Ceremony on Sunday, June 11th are junior flyweight champions Michael Carbajal and Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez, historian / publisher Hank Kaplan and promoter / manager Jarvis Astaire. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

Over 50 boxing stars, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Ken Norton, Erik Morales, Emile Griffith, Angelo Dundee, Aaron Pryor, Leon Spinks, Alexis Arguello, and Canastota's Carmen Basilio are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
