Hall Of Flame Flags At Half-Staff For Hall of Famer Jack Fiske

CANASTOTA, NY – JANUARY 24, 2006 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced its flags will fly at half-staff in memory of boxing journalist Jack Fiske. He passed away this morning at the age of 88. Born Jacob Quincy Finkelstein on July 15, 1917. In 1940, Fiske was a boxing reporter and columnist at the Newport News Daily Press, Alameda Times-Star and the Richmond Independent before joining the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle, where he covered boxing for over 40 years. His twice-weekly column, "Punching The Bag," was one of the most circularized boxing columns in the world and was regarded as the most consistent source of boxing information in the U.S. from 1947-1992.

“Jack Fiske was a giant in boxing journalism. He was thorough, accurate, and a must-read for fans ” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “He will be missed.”

In 2003, Fiske was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
