23.01.04 - Former middleweight and super middleweight champion and current heavyweight contender James "Lights Out" Toney, scheduled to face Jameel McCline on February 7 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, has been forced to withdraw from that bout after suffering a ruptured left Achilles tendon during sparring Wednesday. Toney met with Dr. Tony Daly on Thursday, Team Orthopedist for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, who confirmed the injury, which will need surgery. Toney is scheduled to be operated on at 1pm Friday in Marina Del Rey, California. Dr. Daly expects a full recovery and will determine a timetable for rehabilitation and a return to training following the surgery. Said Dan Goossen, Toney's promoter, "I've got all the faith in the world in James Toney overcoming any obstacle, including this one. Forget the words disappointment and devastation; just remember the phrase 'you can't keep a good man down'."
