Juan Urango defeats Andre Eason

29.08.05 - By Dino Alvarado: On August 26, the boxer to keep an eye on wasn't a heavyweight; he was a southpaw Colombian who knocked down his opponent Andre Eason three times en route to a 7th-round TKO victory, and at age 24, he still has plenty of potential.

Junior-welterweight prospect Juan "El Mello" Urango has a 16-0-1 pro record (13 KO's) and has been compared to Mike Tyson. He admits not putting much thought into his opponent, similar to the idea that Tyson had of simply trying to knock the other guy out. With such a rare blend of speed and power, he can't be blamed. Also like Tyson, he can certainly put on a show for the crowd. He's constantly putting pressure and throwing plenty of punches. For instance, his star-making performance came on "ShoBox" in August 2004 when his fight against fellow unbeaten fighter Mike Arnaoutis was scored a draw. Despite not getting the win, he received a much larger fanbase..

Unlike Tyson, Urango is disciplined in and out of the ring, partly due to his service for the Colombian armed forces. He also had an impressive amateur record, being a 5-time national champion and scoring a victory over fellow amateur (at the time) Miguel Cotto. Urango once said: "In this sport, everyone's goal is to claim the world championship. That's my goal, and once the door and opportunities open up, whoever it is, I'm gonna walk in and take advantage of whatever shows up". Ranked #3 by the IBF and #5 by the WBC, his best boxing is ahead of him, and he won't have to dream of being champion much longer.
