20.08.05 - By Jim Amato: Youngstown, Ohio's unbeaten middleweight sensation Kelly Pavlik has been added to an August 26th fight card in Houston, Texas. The card which is being held at the D+I Colonial Ballroom is to be shown on Telefutura. I have yet to learn who Kelly's opponent will be or if his bout is slated to be televised. Pavlik is 25-0 with 22 KO's. The Ashland (Ohio) Times-Gazette reported recently that favorite son Craig Weber of nearby Perrysville, Ohio was going to meet former great Julio Cesar Chavez in Phoenix, Arizona on September 17th as part of the Chavez "Adios Tour."
Now according to latest reports, Chavez will be meeting light punching Lou Bizzaro of Erie. Pennsylvania on that date. I will try to contact Weber's matchmaker Tom Vacca to see what happened. Maybe Frankie Randall who was recently stopped by Weber told JC that Weber was not worth the risk. I still believe that Weber had a very good chance to upset Chavez.
The big September 3rd card at Cleveland's Gund Arena has been revamped. Kenny Weldon's heavyweight hopeful Sergei Liakhovich was forced to pull out of his bout with Owen Beck due to a rib injury. Moving in to meet Beck will be Cleveland heavyweight Ray Austin. Beck has lost once when he was halted by Monte Barrett. Austin is no slouch as he brings in a 22-3-3 record. He's fought draws with Lance Whitaker and most recently with Larry Donald. He's been stopped only once as Attila Levin turned the trick. Bad break for Liakhovich but a real chance for Austin to make a serious statement. This is an important heavyweight battle in the ever changing heavyweight division. This Don King promotion will be aired on Showtime.
