Camacho Wins Ugly

11.07.05 - By Jeff Bastasini: After one year away from the ring, the old grizzled ring veteran Hector Camacho, now 43, returned to the ring on Saturday night, winning a sloppy and foul plagued 10 round decision over unknown Raul Munoz from Topeka, Kansas. To say that Camacho has lost some speed, as well as boxing ability, would be an understatement to the extreme.

To be honest, Camacho more resembled Elvis in his later years, than his former self. The fight itself had very little suspense with Camacho having little trouble tattooing his fists into the face of Munoz, who probably will never be mistaken for quality opponent.

The first half of the fight, Camacho landed essentially at will with weak, sweeping arm punches. However, the Macho Man soon seemed to tire out the 5th, which is about the time the fight turned into foul contest. The referee, to his credit, did a commendable job in trying to put a stop to Camacho’s rough house tactics, such as holding behind the head and clinching from behind.

Nevertheless, it was sad to see Camacho sinking to the level of hitting Munoz in the face while holding him from behind. That move, and many other similar tactics, caused the fans to lose favor with Camacho, who seemed to revile in the bad guy role.

All three judges scored it 97-92 for Camacho, who improved his record to 79-5-2 (38 KO’s).

In the undercard of the bout, Camacho’s son, Hector,(38-1, 22 KO's) stopped an equally overmatched Francisco Barra (12-15-0) at 2:03 of the 3rd round. The question is, why is Hector Camacho Jr. still fighting opponents as poor as this at this advanced stage of his career?
