Medical Advisory Board votes unanimously not to lift suspension for Mesi

19.04.05 - On Monday afternoon, another nail was hammered into the once promising boxing career of Joe Mesi when four medical experts from the Nevada athletic Medical advisory Board voted not to lift a medical suspension and advised Mesi to stop boxing. "You‘re at significant risk of cranial injury and dying in the ring," said neurosurgeon Dr. Albert Capanna..

Mesi’s career had been cruising along until on March, 2004, when he met with the hard punching Vassily Jirov, who knocked Mesi down three times in a brutal back and forth slugfest. In that bout, Mesi sustained bleeding in the brain, and according to AP, Mesi might have had up to three subdural hematomas. The first two during the tenth round, and the other when he tried to lift some furniture a few weeks later.

Next month, the Nevada State Athletic Commission will bring up the recommendation next month and come to a decision on whether or not Mesi (29-0), can fight again. Other states would have to honor the ban, if the Commission decides on a lifetime ban for Mesi.
