The IBF to ask Andre Dirrell to fight Adonis Stevenson in an IBF 168 lb elimination bout

By Rob Smith: If Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO's) was looking for a quick path to a world title shot then he can't find one better than the IBF 168 pound elimination bout that's being offered to him in a fight against #2 IBF Adonis Stevenson (18-1, 15 KO's) for August 11th in Montreal, Canada. The winner of the Dirrell-Stevenson fight, if Dirrell agrees to accept the fight, will then become the mandatory challenger for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Dirrell has already lost to Froch in 2009 by a 12 round split decision in the Super Six tournament.

Stevenson and his promoter Yvon Michel have had rotten luck trying to get a top 10 contender to accept a fight. They were reportedly already turned down by Kelly Pavlik, Mikkel Kessler, James DeGale, Thomas Oothuizen and most recently Sakio Bika. They were negotiating with Bika and things were going well. However, Bika ultimately decided that he couldn't be ready in time to face the hard hitting Stevenson on August 11th. Bika also wasn't so keen on fighting Stevenson in Montreal, and preferred that the fight take place in a neutral venue.

Dirrell doesn't have a lot of time to accept the offer. He's got to say yes or no by next week, because the IBF has to get a quick answer so that they can move onto the next available contender, which in this case is Don George. Dirrell hasn't fought since beating Darryl Cunningham last December. Dirrell needs to get back in the ring and this would be an ideal way to come back against a big puncher like Stevenson, because he tends to over-swing with his punches by trying to KO everybody with every shot he throws.
