Yet Another Fighter Fails A Drugs Test: what on earth is going on!

By James slater: Over the last couple of months or so, it has seemed as though every time a boxing fan has looked up the latest fight news, he or she has read about how yet another fighter has failed a post-fight drugs test. In what has seemed like a crazy few weeks, we've seen name after household name shamed due to having taken either steroids or some other ilegal stimulant or stimulants.

This spring/summer, the list of fighters so far named as cheaters is inclusive of: Lamont Peterson, Andre Berto, Eloy Perez, Larry Olubamiwo and, the latest to be named and shamed, Antonio Tarver. Fans are on tenderhooks, awaiting the next fighter to he revealed as either a "juicer" or a user of recreational drugs.

It's already quite clear that the sport of boxing has a massive problem, and something simply has to be done. But what? Never before have there been so many fighters caught using illegal stimulants, and the task of monitoring the entire sport is just too big a task. At one point in time, a sportsman was trusted to behave like a sportsman and take it upon himself to live and train clean; wanting to prove to himself he is the best in his chosen field. It seems those days have gone.

How much more can the sport take? Are there more dishonest fighters than honourable fighters? just who will be the next star to be disgraced as a cheater? Will we reach a point where nothing shocks the average fan? We'd better hope not, but the way things are, there is little wonder the currently-incarcerated Floyd Mayweather Junior is on a mission to "clean up the sport."
