Acelino Freitas defeats Michael Oliveira

boxingBy Rob Smith: Former WBO super featherweight champion Acelino Freitas (39-2, 33 KO's) showed that he still has a lot left in the tank in returning from a five-year retirement to stop previously unbeaten Michael Oliveira (17-1, 12 KO's) in the 9th round on Saturday night at the Hotel & Casino Conrad, Punta del Este, Uruguay. Oliveira was able to lure the 36-year-old Freitas out of retirement, perhaps thinking he'd add a famous name to his resume. However, Freitas looked incredibly good, dominating Oliveira from start to finish and knocking him down three times to get a stoppage.

Freitas first struck blood in the 3rd round when he connected with a strong left hook late in the round that sent Oliveira into the ropes. It was ruled as a knockdown because the ropes held Oliveira up, keeping him from falling. In the 9th round, Freitas battered a bruised Oliveira, knocking him down with a hard chopping right hand early in the round. After Oliveira got back to his feet, Freitas teed off on him with combinations, batting him against the ropes until he dropped him with a left hook to the head. The fight was then halted at 2:19 of the round with Oliveira flat on his back bleeding from his nose..

Freitas looked like Robert Duran in there, showing great head movement and a wide punch arsenal. He looked very skilled especially when you compare him to the fighters that are currently at the top of the light middleweight division. The thing of it is Freitas' last weight class was lightweight, and he was effectively moving up three divisions to take this fight.
