David Haye impressed with Froch win over Bute

By Michael Collins: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye really enjoyed Carl Frochís performance last night in stopping IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in the 5th round to capture his International Boxing Federation title.

Haye said on his twitter ďSo proud of Carl Froch tonight. I knew when I saw him warming up it was gonna be a special night. And the new..I just watched Carl Frochís replay of the amazing Bute KO! That was the best performance from a British fighter since Benn vs. McClellan!Ē

Wow! Thatís some compliment from Haye, but Iím not so sure I agree with it. McClellan was a proven fighter and a destroyer, but Bute was totally unproven. Bute came into the Froch fight with a record filled with marginal and less than spectacular fighters. One could say that Buteís best wins came against 43-year-old Glen Johnson and Sakio Bika. Thatís about all you can really look at on his record, because the contenders Bute fought werenít a big deal.

I think Haye is really lowering the bar if heís going to claim that Frochís performance is the best from a British fighter since Benn-McClellan. I think itís a decent win but nothing compared to the Benn vs. McCellan. Now if Froch had beaten WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward, then I could understand Haye getting all excuted because Ward really dominated Frocm last December. Beating Ward would have made Froch something special, but losing to Ward by a one-sided decision and then beating an unproven Bute doesnít make you a great fighter. Froch needs to beat some better fighters, preferably ones that donít have an inflated resume filled with lesser opponents. Haye and Froch are really good friends, so that would explain why Haye would be impressed with Froch.
