Cory Spinks training hard for June 30th rematch against Cornelius Bundrage

By Rob Smith: Former two division world champion Cory Spinks (34-6, 11 KO’s) is hard at work getting ready for his June 30th rematch against IBF light middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage (31-4, 18 KO’s) at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California.

Spinks, 34, was completely dominated by Bundrage in their fight in August 2010, losing by a 5th round stoppage in a one-sided fight. It just looked like Spinks didn’t have the size or power to compete with the stronger Bundrage. Spinks made it tougher on himself by choosing to rest with his back against the ropes, and thus this allowed Bundrage to bludgeon him with hammering shots over and over again until the referee finally stepped to halt the fight in the 5th round.

Spinks told “I am training tremendously hard for my upcoming fight. I can’t wait until June 30 for my fans to see me put on an awesome show.”

Spinks won’t be fighting at home in St Louis, so he’s going to have a tougher time in this bout than he would if he were fighting with thousands of his fans sitting and watching him. However, I don’t know that it would make a lot of difference in this fight because Bundrage seemed to really have Spinks’ number the last time they fought, and I can see him getting another knockout win against Spinks unless Spinks shows a ton of improvement over the last fight.

Spinks has won his last two fights since the Bundrage loss, beating Shakir Ashanti and Sechew Powell. The Powell win was what got Spinks this fight with Bundrage.

Spinks has been largely forgotten by a lot of boxing fans since losing to Zab Judah in February 2005. Spinks was taken out in the 9th round by Judah and he lost his IBF and WBC welterweight titles in the process. Since the Judah fight, Spinks has suffered losses to Jermain Taylor, Verno Phillips and Bundrage
