Golovkin destroys Fuchigami

Gennady GolovkinBy Rob Smith: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (23-0, 20 KO's) kept his unbeaten record intact on Saturday night with an easy 3rd round TKO win over Makoto Fuchigami (19-7, 10 KO's) at the Ice Palace "Termial," in Brovari, Ukraine. Golovkin hurt Fuchigami with some hard right hands in the 3rd and pounded away at him until the referee stepped in and halted the massacre.

The fight was never competitive for an instant, as the 30-year-old Golovkin knocked Fuchigami down once in the 2nd and another time in the 3rd with straight hands to the head. Fuchigami, bleeding from a cut he sustained over his right eye in the 2nd, could do little other than run from Golovkin to try and survive. Fuchigami didn't have the power to stand and trade with Golovkin, and instead he constantly moved in circles throwing mostly pawing jabs. Golovkin looked like a cat chasing his prey, because Fuchigami was in the survival mode from the earliest point in the fight.

Fuchigami was cut from a Golovkin right hand in the 1st near the end of the round. In the second round, Golovkin pinned Fuchigami in the corner and knocked him down with a short right hand to the head, a shot that Fuchigami never saw coming.

In the 3rd round, Golovkin put Fuchigami down with another right hand after staggering him. To his credit, Fuchigami sprung back to his feet and resumed running. However, Golovkin quickly caught up to Fuchigami near the ropes and pounded away at him until the fight was halted with Fuchigami still on his feet and more or less with his senses still intact.

After the fight, Golovkin mentioned wanting to fight WBA Super Champion Felix Sturm.
