Fury stops Rogan in 5th

By Michael Collins: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO's) captured the Irish heavyweight title on Saturday night with a fairly easy 5th round KO win over a tired 40-year-old Martin Rogan (14-3, 7 KO's) at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fury, 23, knocked Rogan down with a nice left to the body in the 5th. Although Rogan made it back to his feet, the fight was halted when the towel was thrown in by his corner to save him from any additional punishment.

Fury also dropped Rogan with a left cross to the head in the 3rd round that sent Rogan stumbling down from the impact of the shot. That was the round in which Fury seemed to get serious with Rogan after giving away the first two rounds through inactivity. Fury fought out of the southpaw stance, and looked decent fighting this way. However, Fury had the perfect opponent for him to experiment with because Rogan was no real threat to beating him.

Rogan had problems with Fury's body shots, as he was getting hit with some really big, big shots and it seemed to take a lot of the fight out of Rogan by the 5th.

After the bout, Fury said "He could not land a blow on me but kept coming at me for five rounds."

I think Fury might be joshing because he was certainly hit with big right hands in the 1st and 2nd rounds, and he didn't look that great in the 4th either.

Other results on the card:

John O'Donnell PTS 8 Martin Welsh
Chris Eubank Jr. TKO 4 Paul Allison
