Hopkins-Dawson: Bernard back in the ring with his nightmare match-up with Chad

By Michael Collins: I bet 47-year-old WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO’s) wished he didn’t have to fight a rematch against former two-time WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO’s). Hopkins looked befuddled against Dawson last October in their brief two round fight that ended with Hopkins being dumped on the canvas by Dawson in the 2nd and injuring his left shoulder in the fall.

Hopkins and Dawson will meet in a rematch on April 28th at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, in New Jersey, U.S.

Hopkins was having problems last October in their brief fight, and all his tricks, such as clinching and wrestling weren’t working. Dawson was making Hopkins look old, and had the fight gone the full 12, Hopkins likely would have been soundly beaten. It’s strange how bad Hopkins looked in the Dawson fight compared to 12 round unanimous decision win over Jean Pascal that took place five months earlier in May of last year. In the course of only five months, Hopkins went from looking like a fighter who had stumbled on the fountain of youth to a fighter that looked 50.

Hopkins looked like someone who didn’t belong in the same ring with Dawson. It was that dramatic. And the injury that Hopkins suffered in the 2nd, came at a perfect time for him to save him a possible embarrassing defeat. Things looked bleak for Hopkins and then the injury. I can’t see Hopkins doing any better in the rematch, and I’m really wondering if there will be some kind of freak injury that will take Hopkins out of the bout before things start really going downhill for him. If Hopkins doesn’t get sidelined with an injury, he’ll likely plaster himself to Dawson all night long and turn the fight into a wrestling match to smother Dawson’s punch output completely.
