Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward Prepares for a Busy Week

04.04.05 - 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward will kick off a busy week with his third professional fight at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif. Ward will battle Roy Ashworth (3-1) of Lake Charles, La., on April 7.. He has spent the past several weeks preparing for his third professional fight, scheduled for six rounds, but his schedule won’t slow down after his bout.

The super middleweight will return home to Oakland for two important events beginning with an appearance at the Oakland Boys and Girls Club “Salute to Youth” on Sunday, April 10. Ward will then test his luck in a different sport as he throws out the first pitch at the Oakland Athletics home opener with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ward’s final appearance of his whirlwind week will take him across the country to New York City to attend the Sullivan Award ceremony. Ward is one of ten finalists for the prestigious award, which recognizes the nation’s top amateur athletes. The 21-year-old joins elite company in multi-time gold medalists Michael Phelps and fellow Bay Area athlete Natalie Coughlin, gold medal gymnasts Carly Patterson and Paul Hamm, and 2004 Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinart of the national champion USC Trojans. While no boxer has ever won the award, Ward hopes to make history at the award ceremony on Wednesday April 13.

Ward’s third pro fight with Ashworth will be his second straight appearance on Fox Sports’ Best Damn Sports Show Period. He will join fellow Olympic medalists Riddick Bowe and Vassiliy Jirov on the April 7th event at Pechanga Resort and Casino.
