“The Ghost” Is Back: Kelly Pavlik To Face Aaron Jaco On March 31st In San Antonio

By James Slater: It has been reported by Youngstown News that former middleweight king Kelly Pavlik will return to action against 34-year-old light-heavyweight Aaron Jaco in San Antonio, Texas on March 31st. The Vindicator reports how 29-year-old Pavlik, 37-2(32), now being trained by Robert Garcia, will meet Jaco at 168-pounds.

Pavlik, inactive since his May 2011 points win over Alfonso Lopez, should have next to no trouble with Jaco, 15-2(5). A pro since 2002, Jaco, known as “Jedi,” started as a light-heavy, then moved up to cruiserweight, was stopped twice (by Chad Van Sickle in the 8th and by Rodney Moore in the 2nd) and then disappeared from 2006 until last year.

A winner of one bout since his ring return (a 1st-round KO over a 10-9-2 fighter back in November), Jaco will now take the biggest of steps up in class against the lethal-hitting, newly rededicated Pavlik. After all he’s been through - rehab, a switch of trainers and a whole load of inactivity - Pavlik is deserving of a nice safe one, but this fight has the distinct look of a one or two-rounder.

Don’t expect Pavlik to rid himself of too much rust in the fight set for the end of this month. The word is, though, that Pavlik will likely return to action on the June 9th Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley card in Las Vegas. Hopefully, the former middleweight ruler will face a stiffer test in that outing. Jaco holds just seven wins over fighters who faced him whilst holding a winning record.

Pavlik, of course, has lost to only Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Gabriel Martinez; both losses coming via decision. Can “The Ghost” make it to the very top again; this time in a new weight class?
