“Forgotten Warrior” Joshua Clottey To Fight In Homeland Of Ghana March 6th, Will Face Xavier Toliver

By James Slater: Having all but vanished since his disappointing March 2010 points loss to superstar Manny Pacquiao, former IBF welterweight champ Joshua Clottey will resurface in March. A fight is set for “The Grand Master” in his homeland of Ghana, with the 34-year-old set to face Atlanta, Georgia’s Xavier Toliver over 12-rounds at light-middleweight.

Clottey, 36-4(21) did have a comeback fight back in November, when he stopped Calvin Green in the 2nd round up at 156-pounds, and the New York-based warrior will no doubt be looking to keep going whatever momentum that win got him. On paper, Clottey should have no real trouble with Toliver, 23-8(15).

Stopped five times during his pro career, Toliver, known as “The X Man,” lost his last two, one by KO the other by DQ, and he has lost each and every time he has stepped up in quality of opponent. A pro since 2000, Toliver has suffered defeats at the hands of Walter Dario Matthysse and Said Ouali (both down at 147), Anthony Mundine and, last time out, Michael Oliveira (the DQ loss).

It’s not clear what kind of a fight we will get on March 6th, but a Clottey win looks almost certain - barring a big, likely career-ending upset anyway. But how much has Clottey got left to offer at the top level? Can the former conqueror of Zab Judah, who also battled Miguel Cotto and Pac-Man make a real go of it as a 154-pounder? Only if he remains active. A good fighter, who has never been stopped, it is to be hoped Clottey has regained his hunger and desire.

Still today, however, many fans are unwilling to forgive Clottey for his non-effort against Pacquiao.
