After Saturday Night’s Action: Rating Today’s Top-10 Light-Welterweights

Amir KhanBy James Slater: So now who is the world’s best 140-pounder? What Lamont Peterson did on Saturday night whilst going to war with Amir Khan was shake up the light-welterweight division big time. Ahead of the exciting fight, most experts agreed Khan was the world’s premiere 140-pounder. But not any more he isn’t.

No way can Khan be looked at as such; not until he gets revenge (if he can actually do so) against the Washington D.C warrior. But if Khan is no longer the best at 140, who is? Peterson?

Here I give my own opinion when it comes to ranking today’s ten best light-welters:

1: Timothy Bradley. WBO champ. 28-0(12). Holds a win over Peterson and also boasts that unbeaten record. Until anyone proves otherwise, “Desert Storm” has to be ranked as the best in the world today at his weight.

2: Lamont Peterson. WBA/IBF champ. 30-1-1(15). Would now be ranked at #1 if not for the loss to Bradley. Peterson now has a number of options: return fights with Khan and Bradley being the two most interesting and exciting.

3: Amir Khan. 26-2(18). Can Khan regain his position atop the division? A return with Peterson would be a hugely important fight, as would the winner of that match going in with Bradley. Khan should, in my opinion, delay his move up to 147 long enough to have two more fights in his current weight class.

4: Marcos Maidana. 31-2(28).

5: Devon Alexander. 22-1(13).

6: Erik Morales. WBC champ. 52-7(36).

7: Lucas Matthysse. 29-2(27).

8: Zab Judah. 41-7(28).

9: Mike Alvarado. 32-0(23).

10: Danny Garcia. 22-0(14).
