Agbeko disappoints Ghanaians

Abner MaresPhoto credit: Naoki Fakuda - By Prince Dornu-Leiku: Ghanaian boxing fans had banked their hopes on compatriot Joseph King Kong Agbeko to beat Mexican Abner Mares in the rematch of their controversial fight barely four months ago. But it was not to be as after staying awake all Saturday night to watch the fight in the early hours of Sunday, Agbeko disappointed without putting his opponent under any pressure.

In the end, the unanimous decision of 118-110, 118-110 and another 118-110 scored by all three ringside judges, just proved how one-sided the fight was. Agbeko even failed to take advantage of a cut suffered above the eye by Mares as early as round 2 with the Mexican proving the better fighter even as he bled profusely all fight long.

“The earlier our boxers learn how to box and not to coax the better for them and boxing in Ghana. Clottey and Agbeko should simply learn boxing and keep their mouths shut. They should learn from Zoom-Zoom,” an obviously disappointed Ajaaku commented on the famous Ghanaian website Ghanaweb's report on the fight.

Another very disappointed person is Jerry Kwame Ayensu, a close pal of Agbeko and once a member of the boxer’s PR team. “Because overtime Agbeko has shown beyond all reasonable doubt that he is the king in that division.

“So as it happened this way, I just think he could have done far better. I am also sure Agbeko’s corner failed to do their job right on the day, their failure to urge him on to take advantage of the cut suffered by Mares in the 2nd round was very sad,” a visibly disappointed Mr. Ayensu told ALL SPORTS.

He however retains hopes that Agbeko will return to the top again. Jerry Kwame Ayensu told us: “I believe that Agbeko still has a fight in him and will come back stronger. I am backing him to be world champion again.”
