Sturm and Murray fight to draw

By Marcus Richardson: Challenger Martin Murray (23-0-1, 10 KO's) gave it a good shot but failed to get the win on Friday night against WBA World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (36-2-2, 15 KO's) in a fight that was scored a draw at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. The final judges scores were 116-112, 115-113 Murray and 114-114. Sturm retains his WBA title with the draw.

If this had been an eight round fight, Murray very well would have been given the decision, as he fought very well for the first seven rounds. However, Sturm came on in the last four rounds to outwork the 29-yer-old Murray and land the much cleaner shots. It was a good performance from Murray, but not good enough. Sturm was making his 11th title defense, and it was his second close call. In his last fight before this one, Sturm defeated Matthew Macklin by a questionable 12 round decision. Although tonight's fight result wasn't controversial, it shows that the challengers are starting to catch up with the 32-year-old Sturm and he'll likely have problems holding onto his title for too much longer unless he can avoid certain fighters.

There's no word whether Sturm will give Murray a rematch or not.
