Australian Boxing: Billy Dib Needs Just One Round In Defending His IBF Featherweight Title

By Srithar Visuasam: Last night at the Homebush Sports Centre, Sydney, Australia, Billy ĎThe Kidí Dib (33-1, 20 KOs) easily dispatched of previously unbeaten Italian Alberto Servidei (31-1-2, 7 KOs), in his first defence of his IBF Featherweight Title.

After claiming the vacant IBF title in July this year in a unanimous points decision victory over Jorge Lacierva in a non-televised bout, Dib was keen to make a statement, promising a knockout prior to the fight. The intention, to boost his profile across the boxing world and Australian sporting fans with this time Dib having a live national broadcast of his fight from pay tv provider Fox Sports supporting him. Upon commencement of the bout, Dib burst out of the blocks keen to inflict as much damage as quickly as possible.

Two minutes, ten seconds into the round it appeared Servidei was knocked down by a Dib punch, which the referee didnít rule to be the case. It didnít matter as moments later, Dib had Servidei pinned against the ropes and unleashed a flurry of punches, with the final shot, a left hand to the body sending Servidei down to the canvas. Servidei looked as if he had had enough and didnít even try to get up as the referee completed the count with Servidei crouched on the ground. It appeared as if he was content with his efforts and seemingly fine to surrender his undefeated record.

Dib was declared victorious 2:38 into the first round and with his first defence completed will look to the new year to further establish himself as one of the premier featherweights in the world. Dib hopes to secure a major fight with undefeated Indonesian star WBA Ďsuperí champion Chris John at some point in 2012.
