Chavez Jr. stops Manfredo

By Ken Neir: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO's) successfully defended his title for the first time in defeating challenger Peter Manfredo Jr. (37-7, 20 KO's) by a 5th round TKO on Saturday night at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas.

Chavez Jr., who looked like a big light heavyweight or cruiserweight in size tonight, had little trouble with the much smaller Manfredo. In the 5th, Chavez Jr. landed a nice right hand that badly stunned Manfredo. Chavez then landed a number of hard shots while Manfredo tried to cover up. Referee didn't like the way things were going and thus stopped the fight at that point with Manfredo still on his feet. The official stoppage came at 1:52 of the round.

Although Chavez Jr. won the fight it's really hard to tell how good he is because Manfredo Jr. just wasn't offering up much. He looked like a step down from the last two guys Chavez Jr. has faced. Beating Manfredo is good, but it really doesn't tell you how Chavez Jr. would do against the likes of Sergio Martinez and/or Saul Alvarez. Personally, I think Chavez Jr. would lose to both of them. However, if he comes into the fight weighing 190 or close to that weight, he could give Alvarez problems but Martinez would still likely blast him apart without any problems. Chavez's promoter probably won't let him fight Martinez next, however. That's good for Chavez but bad for boxing fans who want to finally see him face someone good.

In other action on the undercard:

Joshua Clottey TKO 2 Calvin Green
Marcus Johnson UD 6 Billy Bailey
Mickey Bey Jr UD 8 Hector Velazquez
Ivan Otero MD 4 Gino Escamilla
Wale Omotoso UD 8 Lanardo Tyner
