Kirkland Shocks Angulo

By Ted Sares: After an incredible first round in which both fighters were down, Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo punched himself out and never really recovered as James "The Mandingo Warrior" Kirkland took over the action. Finally, at the 2.01 mark of the sixth round, the referee saved El Perro from himself. Kirkland had stepped up the action and was landing career-ending type shots at the time.

The first knockdown occurred when Angulo landed a thunderous right counter that put Kirkland on Queer Street, but the Mandingo Warrior withstood Angulo's charge and then, after Angulo punched himself out, took over and floored the tough Mexican. From that point to the end, James controlled the action, dictated the pace, and hit Angulo with everything in his arsenal. It was almost surreal to see someone like Angulo take such a beating.

But let there be no mistake. The deciding factor in this fight was Ann Wolfe whose training regime allowed her charge to withstand El Perro's best and then come back with his own best.

Round one will be hard to beat as the best round of the year.
