GBP To Present #1 contender Jhonny Gonzalez on April 1st

10.03.05 - McALLEN, TEXAS---Promoter Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions will be returning to McAllen on Friday, April 1st to present an exciting six bout professional fight card featuring #1 WBC World Ranked Bantamweight contender, Jhonny Gonzalez. The nationally televised event on Telefutura will be held at the La Villa Real in McAllen, beginning at 7:00 p.m..

Gonzales, 26-4 of Mexico City, will take on highly regarded Trinidad Mendoz (20-8, Tijuana, Mexico) in the 10 round Main Event. The Rio Grande Valley's Raul "El Tigre" Cazares and Pablo Pena will both be fighting six round bouts on the undercard. Cazares and Pena's opponents are to be announced as is the remainder of the card.

I'm very excited to return to the Valley with another card, especially one that features such an exciting young fighter as Jhonny Gonzalez," said De La Hoya. "On top of that, we have two of the Valley's best young prospects in Cazares and Pena on the card. They are always exciting to watch."

De La Hoya recognizes he is giving Valley fight fans short notice on an event just two weeks away, but he is confident the fans will turn out. "We had this event scheduled for the Los Angeles area, but lost our venue last week," De La Hoya explained. "I told everyone at Golden Boy that we should pick up an put this in the Valley, The Dodge Arena wasn't available but the La Villa Real was so we made the decision to do it there. I hear its a great venue for boxing, real intimate for the fans. There's been a lot of great fights there in the past and we're looking forward to coming back there."

Tickets are priced at $500 (VIP Table for 10), $30 (reserved) and $20 (general admission). Tickets go on sale Monday, March 14 at all La Villa Real locations.
