De La Hoya talks about his drug and alcohol addiction

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: “It’s the biggest fight of my life. I’ve been up against, you name it, everybody. You put everybody: Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Vargas, I can put all of my opponents into one ring and battle all of them, but this monster is going to be the toughest fight of my life. But I’ll be ready.”

In a recent interview with Oscar De La Hoya (39-6-0) conducted by UnivisionNews (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIkrr-GxQPw&feature=player_embedded#!), De La Hoya reveals his latest struggles against drugs and alcohol, and talks about how deeply depressed he was due to his addictions.

It felt quite unusual seeing De La Hoya being so honest and humble when talking about his personal life and the disasters that it had sustained within the past few years. Cocaine, alcohol and women: sound like a Hollywood movie about a gangster’s life or a bachelor party trip, but instead this was De La Hoya’s life for the past few years.

His ability to check himself into rehab and successfully complete the treatment plan is very admirable, and shows his true intentions as a human being. What I find even more important, is that he understands that this “monster” is not yet gone, and will always follow him around. Just realizing that is a victory in itself, and knowing this, he can always watch out for the signs of trouble.

He is a good man for coming out and talking about this without any hesitation but much regret, making him an honest and humble example for the millions of fans that he had acquired throughout his career.
