Mayweather-Ortiz 24/7 episode 1: Nothing but hype

By Robert Jackson: Mayweather-Ortiz 24/7 episode 1, ah yes, this edition chronicles the exploits of underachiever turned overachiever Victor Ortiz and 24/7 originator Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather, and like they say in show business “any publicity is good publicity”. Water cooler conversation starting the week centers around the confrontation between Jr and Sr which was shown as part 1 ended. Anyone who’s seen Discovery Channel’s ‘American Chopper’ knows that confrontation between the father and son is good for ratings, the same holds true for the Mayweather’s.

The animosity is REAL, and perfectly timed to shock and awe a public that is ripe for sensationalism and dramatic content. The climax of the 1st episode progressed from back and forth banter between father and son escalating too much stronger words and anticipated fisticuffs. HBO had to love it!

What isn’t real is that this was staged or a ploy, though on its own this confrontation should intrigue the pedestrian fight fan enough to invest $60 to see the fight. What is real is that the 24/7 series and this one in particular, puts “asses in the seats”. There is general animosity between Sr and Jr that’s an added dimension to the 24/7 series. Can’t miss TV, the TV execs would say.

Don’t be surprised if Oscar De La Hoya announces a return to the ring to rematch Money Mayweather with Floyd Sr in his corner because after all if Oscar hadn’t stopped jabbing in the middle rounds of their fight he might’ve gotten the victory.
