Montiel defeats Perez

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: Just as many boxing enthusiasts expected, Fernando ‘Cochulito” Montiel (46-3-2) came back with a statement making victory over Alvaro Perez (21-4-1) in Baja, Mexico..

His third round knockout of Perez gave Montiel the confidence needed to call out for a rematch against Nonito Donaire (26-1-0). According to, at the post fight press conference, Montiel stated: “I’m back and ready to win my fourth title in different divisions and in 2012 will seek a rematch against Nonito Donaire.”

Personally, I am very glad that Montiel was able to come out on top and claim the extra confidence needed to proceed with his career. I am one of those people, who were dissatisfied with the result of Montiel’s first fight against Donaire. Giving Donaire all the credit for winning that fight, as well as predicting a knockout for Nonito, I still think that there was more to be seen from Montiel than what we got.

If a rematch was to ever come to fruition, I think their bout could be a much more exciting one, with both fighters showcasing their skills for a longer period of time. I believe their first bout was one where Nonito was able to connect just at the right time and just to the right spot, sending Montiel to the canvas, something that had never been done before. I would not call it a lucky shot for Donaire, but rather an unlucky coincidence for Montiel. Their second fight must happen, as there is much more juice to be squeezed out of that lemon.
