Meehan new WBF champ

Veteran contender Kali Meehan (38-4,31 ko’s) won the vacant World Boxing Foundation heavyweight title with a first round TKO of fellow New South Welshman Michael Kirby (9-4-2, 5 ko’s) at Southport Sharks on Queensland’s Gold Coast on Friday night..

As usual the bustling Kirby swarmed Meehan, forcing the big Fijian born fighter to the ropes but Mehan was ble to punch himself out and when he got some distance was able to sting Kirby with a sharp right. As Kirby pushed forward with a loose cross arm smother, Meehan drove in an uppercut which buckled the knees of the “Iron Rhino” momentarily. Kirby fell into ropes where he caught a right behind the ear and referee Chris Anderson stepped between the two and waved it off. Time: 1.03.

Meehan, 41, later indicated his next opponent would be Oliver McCall before hoping to face David Tua.

In the main support, local super middle prospect Tyrone Jones scored a shut out over the handy Lyndon Edney. Jones was made to miss often but simply threw many more punches than the visitor.

Light middle crowd-pleaser Casey Hannan stopped Will Parsons at the end of round two.

Cruiserweight Steve Roberts halted Ron Branford in round four while Craig Hill jnr stopped Shane Thompson in the first round at welterweight. Hil is the great grand son of Snowy Hill, the trainer of the great bantamweight contender of the 1940’s, Elly Benett.
