Mesi wins ugly decision against Barrett

07.12.03 – Sergiy Ivanov: Joe Mesi (28-0) kept his perfect record intact by winning a 10 round majority decision against Monte Barrett. Mesi was cruizing along in the 7th, when Barrett knocked Mesi down with a big left hook. Mesi won the fight, but he looked pretty awful to look at afterwards with a swollen shut left eye, and his face puffy from the beating he received at the hands of Barrett. Mesi controlled the action early on with power punching that hurt Barrett on several occasions, but as the fight wore on, Mesi seemed to lose a lot of steam on his punches. After Barrett knocked down Mesi in the 7th, the tempo of the fight turned around and favored Barrett for the rest of the way.

Mesi's dismal performance puts serious questions about his potential as a future Heavyweight star. If he's struggling against fighters like Barrett, what will he do if has to step it up and fight someone like the Klitschko brothers, James Toney or Jameel McCline? Anyone who witnessed Mesi's poor display of boxing skills tonight knows the answer to that question.

One judge had Mesi winning 95-93, a second had it 94-93 and a third 94-94. East Side Boxing scored it even at 94-94.
