Julio Diaz gives up IBF title

03.02.05 - Julio Diaz Wednesday voluntarily relinquished his International Boxing Federation lightweight championship. What follows are quotes from Scott Woodworth, executive vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions, which promotes Diaz, explaining the champion’s reasons and regrets for this action: “Julio today voluntarily relinquished his IBF junior featherweight championship, and we at Sycuan Ringside Promotions wholeheartedly endorse this unselfish act..

“Julio would have like nothing better than to have carried the IBF belt into the ring against Castillo in a title unification bout. But after long and deliberate consideration, both Julio and Sycuan Ringside Promotions felt it better not to draw the IBF into a protracted law suit with Lou DiBella, even though we certainly would have won any legal battle.

“But, I emphasize, neither Julio nor Sycuan Ringside Promotions were intimidated in the least by DiBella’s hollow threats of a lawsuit.

“To that end, we have a letter from the IBF stating that it would have considered granting Julio an extension if it was requested.

“Further, there was not a signed agreement between the parties for the fight between Julio and Johnson.

“Now Johnson and DiBella are able to take their annual shot at the title. We wish the boxer the best in his future ring efforts.”
