Disciplined Gatti By KO Over Leija In 5

29.01.05 - By Aidan Monaghan: In what had been essentially a boxing clinic (yes, a boxing clinic) for 4 rounds, put on by Arturo Gatti (yes, that Arturo Gatti) in his Saturday night match-up against the crafty and resilient 38 year old veteran Jesse James Leija in Atlantic City, ended in the usual spectacular fashion that most of Arturo Gatti's knockout wins produce. But make no mistake about it - this KO was the direct result of a very disciplined effort on the part of Gatti, to adhere to the boxing strategies that have been brought to the table by Gatti trainer Buddy McGirt.. Through rounds 1-4, Gatti did little else but move, throw numerous hard jabs and straight right hands (over 40 jabs per round in fact). A game and sturdy Leija - who had his moments on a limited basis - absorbed the heat as well as anyone could until round five, when a lone straight right landed to Leija's head, sent him straight to the canvas. Barely beating the count, Leija gave as good as he got for several seconds when the action resumed, as Gatti resumed his role as the wide open slugger that he often has been throughout his matches in the past. Finally, after a barrage of punches launched by both fighters, a Gatti left hook to Leija's head once again sent him to the deck, for good. Although Leija looked able to continue, the bout was halted with Leija resting on one knee, at 1:48 of round 5. Gatti's record now stands at 39 wins (30 KO's) against 6 defeats. Leija's record fall to 47 wins, against 7 losses and 2 draws.
